Report: Sunday AFL show for Seven

Seven is reportedly plotting for a new AFL show in 2023.

A Sunday AFL show will return to Seven next year, possibly under Game Day banner, last seen in 2020.

The Herald Sun reports the new show is in the initial planning process but it isn’t clear who would host, with Hamish McLachlan as the show’s previous host.

Mooted names suggest the line-up could include Daisy Pearce, Tom Browne and Mitch Cleary while rising star Abbey Gelmi is due to give birth to her first child.

Amended.

  1. It seems very strange that seven haven’t had such a show (or shows even) and seemingly conceding the ground to nine even though seven presumably have access to unlimited footage of past games to talk about. I would not have thought it was so expensive to have talking heads reviewing past footage of games.

  2. Channel 7 desperately needs some sports programs during the Sunday mornings. Without any Sunday sporting talk programs, the ratings suffered a lot in Melbourne. Back until 2006, Seven had Sportsworld with Jo Griggs as host (Which shows a chockful of variety of sports). But it wasn’t until 2008, when 7 had a Sunday sporting talk program, AFL Game Day which focuses on AFL news as part of 7 having AFL rights.
Hamish might not be available but I think it’s likely that Daisy Pearce, Tom Browne will host.

  3. For a broadcaster that had rights to the AFL it was very poor indeed. Nine had 3 shows a week as mentioned above Talking Footy was a good Monday night show after all games?

  4. Good to read that “Game Day” is returning.

Seven, the home of AFL, had not many AFL shows over the last 2.5 years, with the dropping of the original Game Day (on Sunday mornings) and Talking Footy. The Front Bar is more entertainment. Nine, however, still has The Sunday Footy Show and Footy Classified twice a week.

  5. I think you may be referring to Abbey Gelmi who announced her pregnancy on October 2. Nevertheless, the return of a serious AFL show to Seven (Game Day or similar) is well overdue.
