Seven teases new multichannel, 7Bravo.

Female-skewing channel launches in January with US reality, entertainment and true crime content.

Female-skewing channel 7Bravo launches on January 15 with US reality, entertainment and true crime content.

Amongst the unscripted titles are Real Girlfriends In Paris, Southern Hospitality and Love Without Borders.

True crime content is from Oxygen, while The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and The Kelly Clarkson Show, and awards shows feature with Live From E!

Seven Chief Content Officer, Entertainment Programming, Angus Ross told TV Tonight, “In some ways it’s a female version of 7mate in terms of its demographic richness for under 50.”

Also due are Below Deck Down Under (S1), Below Deck Adventure, The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip (S1), The Real Housewives of Dubai, The Real Housewives of Miami, and Judge Jerry.

“Add it all up and Seven has a highly compelling, engaging and entertaining line-up for 2023, a line-up that will capture the hearts and minds of all Australians,” he said.

Given some titles screen on hayu and Foxtel, the window for 7Bravo is expected to be six months.

  1. Oh no! Like a good little viewer I went to all the hassle of rescanning just after noon on Wednesday, as directed. Now I learn that the new channel is this sort of rubbish? And it is not even starting until January? And I have no idea what a “bravo” is? I thought it was just another silly made up name like Shake and Peach, but obviously aimed at men (if it was women it would be Brava).

Going home now to delete the channel.

  2. To my mind this channel is a curious decision by Seven, in reality Seven could still release this channel without specifically identifying which gender the featured content is intended for. Seven’s TV execs probably considered 7Bravo a shrewd marketing strategy to develop female audience numbers because women probably will buy a lot of TV advertised merchandise, probably more than men, but this avoids the reality that right now the largest percentage of content currently being created as TV entertainment is intended to be more representative of everyone, including minorities, and women are now far more strongly represented in these productions than ever before in recent times. I wonder what reaction would happen if a new channel mainly intended for male viewers was proposed, featuring original male action genre shows with strong masculine themes, themes considered to be somehow toxic in some quarters of the critical social media.

    1. That’s a very good analysis. I agree. There was Movies4Men in the UK that had the sort of films you mention, though it was replaced with Sony Movies Action in 2019. Proclaiming it is a gender skewed channel would likely be to target the demographics for advertising. There’s a need and want to be more inclusive and diverse, but there’s also the majority and established demographics that they have to balance or contend with for revenue and ratings.

  3. In terms of variety of genre on Freeview, it’s not ideal as 9Gem is already a ‘Women’s interest channel’. Though there’s enough variation in programming for 7Bravo to stand on its own, unlike 7 Food Network which had very similar content to SBS Food.

  4. Wish they would just put the dating reality shows like Love Island on one of the channels, the Traitors & those sort of reality on a different channel. maybe comedy, crime, drama on their own channels too, so one does not have to look all over the epg to find what suits them. That way people are more likely to stay on the same channel for more hours, isn’t that what networks want??

  5. Should see Seven’s total share of eyeballs rise. Smart move. But it will obviously exacerbate the ratings decline on all shows on main channels as they continue their downward trajectory.

  6. About time every multi channel had 50% Australian content.
I find the more channels they have the less there is to see, especially since many of these shows are in constant repeats.
It should be quality over quantity!
    That’s my view anyway!

    1. Although in this genre even if it’s Aussie programming it’s still trashy programming. Not really practical to have 50% content on all digital channels, even if that’s repeats.

Is there still a threshold though – didn’t they used to have spend 10% of their budget on original Australian content, even though that was often achieved through New Zealand acquisitions.

  7. It would be nice if NBCUniversal aired season 21 and 22 of Law and Order so that we can finally catch up and be with the rest of the crew. Maybe it will eventually land in Australia on streaming services and be able to purchase on DVD. Aside from the latest versions of SVU and Organised Crime, it’s the only one I am missing in my collection of the Law and Order Universe.

    1. There’s a view that women like crime and medical programs going by the programming decisions on some channels. Or that men generally prefer fishing and motorsports. It’s not a one size fits all, which is why I think Gem and Bravo can stand on their own. It’s segmented interests.

  8. can any of the commercial networks give us a channel that isn’t just American cable TV content 24/7. I guess 7two and Gem have some UK content but in any case surely there is enough inventory for some Aussie content on these channels.

  9. Bravo addict here. Even with hayu ap being abit dodgy sometimes thank god for Hayu. Gotta have it fresh from the US and with no ads! This will be great for casual fans not for me though. Goodluck!

    1. The sure do have most of these shows on Arena, occasionally on other channels like “E”, LTM and TLC too but Foxtel rearrange the “deck chairs “ constantly. I’ve been dealing with a rep on an app problem and I have been advised that they don’t have the license to show it as a stand alone so Foxtel customers probably won’t get it because of the other associated channels they screen the shows on.

      1. Hence my point , I’ve had Foxtel since 1995 and they use other channels to show the different shows mentioned as I stated, Bravo was once for art and film but now are into reality and I think are owned by NBC?
