Socceroos push SBS to Saturday victory, ABC second.

More than a million viewers watch Socceroos defeat Tunisia, as SBS nabs a rare ratings victory. ABC second thanks to state election.

SBS achieved a rare Saturday night ratings win thanks to the FIFA World Cup match between Australia v Tunisia.

1.03m metro viewers watched the Socceroos claw back a win to stay alive in the football tournament, a figure which will climb higher still with regional and BVOD numbers.

SBS won Saturday with an overall share of 29.2%, easily their best performance all year, on the last night of 2022 survey.

Meanwhile ABC came second driven by the Victorian election coverage with a network share of 24.4%.

Remarkably, that left commercial networks to follow: Seven 19.6%, Nine 18.9% and 10 trailing at just 7.5%.

ABC News channel drew a 7.0% share for the night.

In the Victorian election coverage, ABC led the way.

  1. By my count, and notwithstanding the diminishing relevance of weekly wins, based on overnight metro numbers, seven takes this week making the yearly tally 21-19 to nine (which includes Olympics and Comm games 3 weeks) and doesn’t take into account the 7 day catchup which will make a meaningful difference – shows like home and away routinely double (+400k) and this is a show 4 days a week every week. I see in the press seven and nine are claiming 2022 as theirs…..seven for the official rating period and nine for the calendar year (the Oz open really pumping up nines non rating week numbers). So mature.

  2. Ratings results depend on the sample mix of viewers . If you choose more NRL preferred viewers over say golfers that skews the results. When golf is on the golf followers are not represented in the panel mix so you get a 1% total view .When NRL/VFL is on you get 30% viewers SBS found their Tour De Francs viewers.in the early days much greater than the official ratings figures. IMHO 1500 or 5000 is still a small sample & what is the declared interest of the “pollees”

  3. Shame that Sky News election coverage wasn’t seen by more Victorians…it was good…

personally I thought Nine and Sky had the best coverage.
    Seven was terrible

    Two was ok

  4. You can see why 10 had high hopes last summer for the A league on at least making them competitive on Saturday nights…the interest is limited soley to the national team and World Cups and not the lumbering domestic comp.

10 only mustered 88k for a domestic A League match on an equivalent Saturday last year. Ouch!

  5. I’ve since been told “he is usually very good, but had an off night”… But as someone who saw Antony Green for the 1st time during the ABC’s Victorian state election coverage last night, I don’t think I’ve seen such a “deer in the headlights” live performance for over a decade. I think the only name he didn’t mispronounce was his own!

  6. I have looked through the ratings & was surprised that the SBS/ABC did extremely well thanks to the soccer & election respectively. It is extremely rare to see public broadcasters top the night.
As I calculated the audience shares for the final official ratings week, I noticed that SBS has secured 4th with a healthy share. Network 10 has finished in 5th place. Network 10 has never finished 5th in terms of weekly shares in its OzTAM history. 10 used to rate well back from late 1990s through to 2010, but their ratings have been a basket case. It looks as though Channel 10 will probably struggle into December.

  7. With the Vic election being decided in the first hour I went to SBS to await the Soccer. With ‘main channels’ SBS 25.9, ABC 14.7, 7&9 12.4, what’s 10’s excuse for 3.9?
    a) Rerun of a show that you ran a few nights ago – NCIS, b) a show that you will rerun a few nights from now – Blue Bloods, or c) all of the above?

  8. “1.03m” – wow! What a feat for SBS to achieve on a Saturday night of all days, and at 9 PM as well. It just goes to show that sometimes there is still a little bit of interest collectively through traditional mediums in a social media, streaming-heavy world.

    1. SBS managed to get Australia’s 3rd win (out of 19 attempts) in the World Cup finals in prime time on a Saturday night where was little competition. Now all we have to do is not lose to Denmark and we equal our best performance.

  9. Love seeing a very different daily ratings report with the underdog taking the crown:) . I look forward to Monday’s final ratings week report. I hope I am right but it is not often that SBS is not last for a change.

  10. Thank you for the rare Saturday ratings reports topic.

A huge result for SBS – cracking the magic million mark for the match, and helping SBS win the night with a good margin.

Nice to see the numbers for the Victorian State Elections too.
