Big Bash League 2022: guide

BBL returns as Sydney Thunder take on the Melbourne Stars at Manuka Oval.

The Big Bash League returns to Seven tonight when Sydney Thunder take on the Melbourne Stars at Manuka Oval, Canberra.

Seven’s commentary team is led by Ricky Ponting, with Ian Bishop, Greg Blewett, James Brayshaw, Trent Copeland, Ryan Daniels, Holly Ferling, Damien Fleming, Brad Hodge, Erin Holland, Justin Langer, Andy Maher, Mel McLaughlin, Alister Nicholson, Will Pucovski, Jason Richardson, Lisa Sthalekar and Elyse Villani.

BBL stars Sam Billings, Alex Carey, Alana King, Aaron Finch, Chris Green, Moises Henriques and Glenn Maxwell will all be regulars on Seven’s coverage.

Former Australian women’s captain Lisa Sthalekar said, “Given how difficult it has been the past few years operating with COVID, I expect the players and fans will see a real celebration of BBL this year,” she said.

“With the opportunity for so many of our Aussie stars to be available at the back end of the season, it brings the opportunity for an action-packed lead into Finals.

“The two most successful clubs, the Sixers and Scorchers, have again put together a quality squad and no doubt will be there in the Finals. Their counters are always nail-bitting matches and I wouldn’t expect anything different this year.

“One player that we haven’t seen for a while in BBL is Andre Russell and while he won’t be out for the entire competition, there’s no doubt he will provide plenty of entertainment. The other aspect I am looking forward to is a few of our Aussie stars coming back and playing BBL. It has been a while since we have seen Warner turn out for the Thunder and he will certainly want to show his dominance in this format!”

With a fierce rivalry, bound to ensure BBL|12 starts with a bang, the Thunder will bring enormous firepower to this year’s competition, with international stars David Willey and Rilee Rossouw set to pull on the lime green for the first time, while Alex Hales will return to the Thunder to join the likes of David Warner.

Led by Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis, the Melbourne Stars will once again unveil an explosive line-up for the 2022-23 season, headlined by New Zealander Trent Boult.

Tuesday night’s season opener kicks off 45 BBL matches on Seven in 2022-23, including all marquee games and finals. It also headlines a massive opening week that includes:

Wednesday night: Adelaide Strikers v Sydney Sixers
Thursday night: Brisbane Heat v Hobart Hurricanes
Friday double-header: Melbourne Stars v Hobart Hurricanes, followed by Sydney Thunder v Adelaide Strikers
Sunday: Melbourne Renegades v Sydney Thunder

In a massive week for cricket fans, the highly-anticipated Australia v South Africa test will also light up the screens of Seven, opening on Saturday morning at The Gabba from 10.00am AEDT, live and free on Channel 7.

  1. BBL used to be a watchable product back several years ago, but now there’s too many games in one season. IN the past 6 years, BBL added major tweaks to the game. I was very annoyed when CA made changes to the Cricket game including POwer Boost, and Bash Boosts.

    1. That is the reason it is failing but CA will swear to their blue in the face that it’s even better than before , although there are rumours it may drop to 40 games ,to me the damage is done and I am watching the first BBL now and I’ve become bored already ,only 60 more games to go 😴

  2. BBL is reasonably interesting cricket but 45 games is just too many in too dense a period for me. The Golden Goose is only just hanging onto life and I don’t think many games will get more than 250,000 five city metro figures.

    1. Considering there’s 3 test matches against South Africa starting Saturday you may be right it’ll be alot of cricket over the next 2 months so like the Jack Nicholson movie Something’s Gotta Give.

      1. There’s an irony here if memory serves…..seven wanted the cricket (because they lost the tennis) primarily for the BBL; foxtel and seven paid through the nose and CA were somehow required to add games to make the $$$ paid worth it; now seven most likely want out of the BBL and the tests have rated quite well. When you combine fox and sevens numbers for BBL, they are not terrible but still lower. Way too many BBL games as others have commented. Foxtel definitely wants to keep the cricket and need an FTA partner; ten most likely won’t want to share with Foxtel. So seven may still be in the mix with loads less (or none) bbl, retain tests and perhaps add ODIs. Weirdly seven could pressure foxtel on content and lower dollars.
