SKY News leaks King’s Christmas Message

SKY News broke Royal protocol when it uploaded clip to YouTube 10 hours in advance.

SKY News broke with Royal protocol when it published the King’s Christmas Message to YouTube ahead of its British broadcast.

Reports claim the eight minute speech was published to YouTube at 5:15am UK time, 10 hours before the 15:10 GMT time agreed to by Buckingham Palace and BBC Studios.

There was anger in the YouTube comments section, with people asking why the footage had been uploaded.

In only three hours, the video was watched by over 60,000 people.

  1. In the scheme of things, does it really matter?

It’s not as if the Sovereign’s message is going to include matters for which the public needs to be prepared for or there needs to be careful PR management.

    1. Advertising revenue to the outlet that broke the embargo (Sky News would be paid for advertising before their YouTube clip started).

And it’s just bad practice to break an embargo. If anything, they should have at least geo-blocked the YouTube clip.

  2. Indeed they did. And it’s still there! 683k viewers so far. The comments seem to be more “royal gushing” than critical of Sky News. Perhaps they are deleting the critical comments or they are buried deep down.

I watched it at about 12:10 GMT (although I did watch the 4K version on BBC iPlayer later that night).

Intro to the message was also included in the video. Simon Love did the intro.
