Auditions: The Traitors

Whodunnit show looks set to return to 10 in 2023.

Casting has opened for a second season of The Traitors, yet to be formally announced by Network 10.

“Australia’s most thrilling show The Traitors has returned! Have you got what it takes to play the ultimate game of strategy and deception?” a casting notice asks.

“Could your charm and powers of persuasion carry you to the finish line? What would you risk and how far would you go to win a life changing prize?”

Filming is expected to take place from mid April to mid May 2023.

While the series faced stiff competition from The Block, in particular, the UK version took off and a US edition is now underway with host Alan Cumming.

In the TV Tonight Awards, readers included the show in the Top 5 for Best New Show of 2022.

  1. I am very glad that it is returning as the show has a lot of potential – While I only casually watched the Aussie version (timing issues & early eps were lacking in being compelling, loved the final), it was a lot better than most Aus shows last year. Additionally, the UK version was great, and the American version was good too (not a fan of the half-reality star/half-normie casting concept – even if some fave Survivor US players were in the reality bunch).

However, I hope they take from the UK version in producing the second Aus season – in casting (bigger characters), in the edit (in their 60-minute eps, the only screen time not compelling was the challenges – which were hit and miss), even the rules of the game (traitor recruitment being an option open from when some a certain amount of traitors are voted out – and that being clearly outlined at the start of the game, immunity shield being in play every episode and awarded secretly – to add mystery to each elimination).

  2. Putting your faith in a format which didn’t rate as well as you hoped but got positive reviews is probably a better bet than throwing yet another three new formats on screen in the last few months of the season and hoping for the best.

Nowadays too it’s also not just about the overnights, the 7 day figures or even the 28 day figures. I suspect a show like this can pick up viewers on 10Play months after it aired, building an audience for season 2.

  3. It has potential, but needs a lot of work. I spent most of the season feeling angry about the format flaws.

The traitors are forced to recruit all the way until the top 5? That’s a disincentive to banish the traitors.
And they need to be given more material to work with to guess the traitors, get more creative with the challenges, they spent most of the season guessing who the traitors were based on body language of episode one.

  4. Am glad this is getting another chance. Saw the UK version and the what happened at the start of the first episode was great and took everyone by surprise. Hopefully they can borrow from the pacing of the UK version so that the whole season doesn’t feel as drawn out as S1.

  5. They’ve got to hope it’s a sleeper hit and it gains viewers. As Kushaa has mentioned, it has been a hit in the UK. Even the Australian version had mainly positive reviews despite the ratings, unlike The Real Love Boat and The Challenge, which had a lot of negative reviews, though a few were positive. There’s a chance it could work well for Ten. I actually like the show and had dismissed it at first because it mentioned the theme of murder, which had put me off.

  6. I am glad that this show is given a second chance. If it is a hit in UK, there’s still a chance that it may be a hit in Australia. Maybe they just need to tweak the format a little bit.

  7. On the one hand I applaud Ten for sticking with it, hoping it will pop or grow ratings-wise in the second season. On the other hand, if the poor season one ratings warrant renewal that suggests to me Ten are very, very desperate and have no hope of fixing their ratings woes.
