Axed: 1899

"We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season," say German co-creators.

German mystery sci-fi 1899 is not proceeding to a second season at Netflix.

Co-creator Baran bo Odar confirmed on his Instagram, in a statement signed by co-creator Jantje Freis, “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life.

“We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure,” the statement continued. “We love you. Never forget.”

1899 debuted in mid November and followed a group of immigrants aboard a ship faced with a series of mysterious events.

The series served as a follow-up to Adar and Friese’s previous series Dark, a landmark international breakout for Netflix in 2017.

  1. Considering the former success of the creatives the 1899 series ending after just one season will be a disappointment for them, but after watching the ‘extra feature’ about the making of 1899, the large budget that would be needed to make season 2 didn’t help the shows future prospects, 1899 would have needed an exceptional audience response to justify this investment. I didn’t mind 1899 though the story arc became rather weak towards the end, which tested my resolve to watch this series until the conclusion, for this reason I can imagine some viewers who may have left half way through, including some who like me watched it out of curiosity having enjoyed the earlier ‘Dark’ series. In conclusion the challenging big budget effects technology may have dominated the makers mindset a bit too much but the final chapter did provide a tantalizing teaser for sci-fi fans, so who knows, maybe the shows writers will find another option for this story in the future, maybe in Germany.

  2. Netflix has a nasty habit of axing shows early. It really makes me reluctant to start watching their dramas. What’s the point if all their stories end early, usually on a cliffhanger?
