Golden Globe Awards 2023: winners

Wins for House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Ozark.

The 80th Golden Globe Awards have been held at the Beverly Hilton, hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael with House of the Dragon and The White Lotus taking out the top TV awards.

But Abbott Elementary also won three awards.

The awards returned after no broadcast in 2022. Carmichael opened with a long explanation of being hired as host (for $500,000 he revealed), which was big on politics but light on gags.

“I’ll tell you why I’m here…. I’m here ‘cos I’m black,” he said as he recalled being invited to become the “black face of the white embattled organisation.”

But it represented the Hollywood Foreign Press Association confronting its own poor history around diversity.

“I took this job assuming they haven’t changed at all,” he continued.

“But I’m here because I look out and see a lot of talented people I admire… I think this industry deserves evenings like this.”

  1. A fan of Jennifer Coolidge and her character since series 1 she was the standout for me in both but why did Mike White decide it was time for her be “pushed off her twig”. We didn’t get to actually see what the volatile Greg the husband was up to in series 2 in the end. The House of the Dragon was another great standout from the plot, creativity with props, scenery, costumes and the actors/actresses an around immersive show for me. The only sour note was Eddie Murphy and those who thought it was funny referencing the slap/hit Will Smith did showing aggression/violence for all the world to see.

  2. I haven’t seen all the shows or performances, but the disappointments for missing out were.
    Henry Winkler – Barry
    Jenna Ortega – Wednesday
Aubrey Plaza – The White Lotus
    Adam Scott – Severance
    Wednesday – The series

And the winners I was happy with
    Zendaya – Euphoria
    Julia Garner – Ozark
The White Lotus: Sicily – Series
House of the Dragon – Series

    1. I agree… what is he up to? So many awkward moments after his outlandish controversy-baiting quips… his agenda is very confusing, is he trying to be funny or profound?

    2. There was nothing that made this show memorable or stand out. The world is shifting its views and attitudes and these shows don’t know how to handle that.

I watched a four hour show in about an hour, skipping speeches etc. It seems to me that these awards shows are going to have to adapt or die. They are becoming less and less relevant. I was surprised that it was held on a Tuesday night (US time).

    3. OMG yes – maybe Im too old and just didnt ‘get’ his humour. He was bad, bad, bad. I actually dont think you can go past Amy and Tina – they are the best and I could watch their opening monologues over and over

      1. Here’s my take… at the time I watched opening monologue live, I was worried. He was pacing, low key, seemed to be rambling, where were the jokes? But now I look back it has grown on me. He had to address the elephant in the room (especially as first black host), which he did intimately, honestly, like a one on one conversation. But he finished on an up note, by honouring the talent in the room. A good balance given the situation. As host you also have to make your mark not be cookie cutter, and he surely did that.
