Australian Idol 2023: meet the Top 12

Talent show locks onto its Top 12 for performance shows.

Australian Idol last night locked onto its Top 12 contestants for 2023.

The diverse group ranges in age from 15 – 28 from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia, with a variety of singing and performing styles.

Performance shows begin Sunday night on Seven before Live Results shows on Monday night.

Amali Dimond, 16 NSW
Works at an ice-cream shop and hopes to trade sundaes for superstardom. “Since I could talk, I felt I was born to
perform and entertain people. I have been inspired by Australian Idol contestants Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian all my life. I would love to inspire others with my music as they have inspired me.”

Angelina Curtis, 15 WA
A Year 9 school student ready to share her natural talent with the world. “I’ve played the piano since I could walk and climb up to the piano stool! I wrote my first song on the piano when I was nine years old.”

Anya Hynninen, 19 VIC
Smalltown singer who dreams of making it big like her stepdad Bernard. “My mum taught me to sing as she performed in folk clubs, but my stepdad, Bernard, has helped take me to another, more professional level.”

Ben Sheehy, 24 QLD
Guitar teacher who wants to share his unique vocal talent with Australia. “I accidentally fell into singing at school when there was a need for a singer. After an audition, the music coach responded, ‘Did you know you could sing?”

Harry Hayden, 18 VIC
Year 12 student who is passionate about the arts. “I started singing because I wanted an outlet to manage my emotions and singing helped me to process and feel. My singing is also very versatile, and I love exploring the many dimensions of all forms of music.”

Jasey Fox, 25 NSW
Dancer from inner-city Sydney. “I grew up listening to everyone from Tom Jones to Snoop Dogg and Freddie Mercury to Billy Joel. I think I attempt to emulate all of the greats in some Frankenstein-like way!”

Josh Hannan, 20 VIC
Lives on a rose farm and studies physiology. “My singing reflects my emotional side and I tend to draw inspiration from different moments in my life as I sing.”

Maya Weiss, 28 VIC
Yoga teacher and DJ. “I signed up for Idol because I watched the show as a kid and would say to my family ‘one day, that will be me auditioning for Idol’! I’ve only ever wanted to be a singer; it means the world to be a part of this show.”

Noora H, 27 NSW
Singing travel agent from south-west Sydney. “I have a look people will appreciate and hope to bring more diversity into the music industry. I also want to connect with people using my voice.”

Phoebe Stewart, 15 WA
A high school student living on a farm in regional Busselton, WA. “After experiencing hearing and middle ear problems, including multiple bilateral grommets and an eardrum graft four years ago, I want to pursue my dream of making people happy with my talent.”

Royston Sagigi-Baira, 23 QLD
A youth worker from Far North Queensland. “Other than singing, my other passion is community work, specifically with the young people in remote indigenous communities. I come from those places and I know how important it is to have leaders in a small place.”

Sash Seabourne, 25 WA
A 25-year-old surfer. ”I started singing after falling in love with albums by Boy and Bear, Matt Corby,
Fleetwood Mac and Bruce Springsteen when I was a teenager.”

7pm Sunday, Live 7:30pm Monday on Seven.

  1. I am going to be controversial by saying that Harry’s delivery of touchdown is the highlight of the show so far :). Some people may argue that he was trying to show off his technical knowledge in music by referencing all those different ‘key chords’ but it was different.
