Do Idol home visits know judges are coming?

When Harry Connick Jr. pays you a surprise visit do you feign surprise?

On Australian Idol last night, Harry Connick Jnr. went to the tiny town of Scone, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, to discover new talent.

He asked 18-year-old Hamish Guiana to audition in his music classroom.

It was the latest ‘home visit’ which has other judges visit Alice Springs, Eton, Newcastle, Mackay as they search for the Top 50.

Guiana was shocked to see the American star at his school. But was it genuine or did he know Connick Jr. was coming?

Some readers have commented that cameras inside homes prior to the ‘surprise’ knock at the door are a giveaway that the judges are expected.

But looks can also be deceptive.

Seven sources told TV Tonight, contestants knew production was coming to film a backstory but had no idea the Judges would turn up. They also had no idea they had to audition on the day.

It was good news for Hamish Guiana, whose rendition of Niall Horan’s This Town saw him win a golden ticket to the Top 50.

Updated: Final auditions will screen on Seven on Sunday night.

      1. Disagree, no difference to watching on the night or PVR its all recorded.
A live performance/judging is what they are misleadingly advertising.
        Desperate times @ 7

        1. Um actually you’re incorrect. The advertisers would want u watch it live and not via pvr as you skip their ads. Channel 7 want you to also watch it live and not later on. Hence the current advertising campaign. By more people watching it live, obviously it looks good for their shareholders and on the night viewing. They have invested alot of money into this show, so they want eyeballs on there show at that particular time.

      2. But it’s not live! It’s prerecorded when it is broadcast. Live television is a television production broadcast in real-time, as events happen, in the present. Regardless, it can’t be ‘Live’ across every timezone.

          1. Are the performance shows going to be live David?

…. Im watching survivor but I watched the clips of auditions and boy they were mediocre. No on stood out. Not good.

  1. So if they were filming a back story wouldn’t that make you think you’ve got through to the next round or will feature prominently in the show? Nice surprise to have US B/C list celebs rock up to your place

  2. Even if the visits were entirely staged, which they say some parts are not staged, I don’t mind it if it doesn’t affect the outcomes as it suits the show.

It’s not like Hunted, reality or a quiz show where it’s shameful if it’s staged as those shows claim to be real.

  3. I’ll never forgive HCJr for leading outrage towards hey hey being cancelled when it was brought back

It was proven that he made fun of black people and did blackface on a US skit show back in the day

    1. With respect, I think you have your wires crossed. He made the comment in the second of two reunion specials in 2009 when he was asked his opinion on a Red Faces act. He was actually very polite in pointing out it would never fly in the USA. The show returned for 20 more episodes in 2010.
