Liar, liar, TV pants on fire.

Would I Lie to You? host Chrissie Swan admits she isn't great at picking a liar, but the gameplay of 10 series is too much fun.

If she is to be believed, Chrissie Swan isn’t a very good liar.

“I learned early on that I’m no good at it, so I don’t do it. And my kids are the same,” she tells TV Tonight.

“It turns out, I’m also terrible at picking when someone is lying. So with the show, I get fooled all the time.”

Season 2 of Would I Lie to You? Australia premieres on Monday with Swan leading celebrities through the predicament of guessing just who is telling porky pies and who is the real deal.

As the gameplay unravels she also prefers not to know who is hoodwinking their fellow players.

“But I’ve got a memory like a goldfish. Maybe they have told me who’s lying and stuff, but in the moment, I completely forget and get swept away in it.

“It’s like the best dinner party you’ve ever been to. It’s such a joy to film and I just get absolutely carried away in it. I forget where I am half the time.”

Joining the cast this season is new Team Captain Charlie Pickering replacing Chris Taylor, alongside returning Captain Frank Woodley.

“I think Chris might have had some other like bibs and bobs going on. I think he’s just welcomed a baby. I don’t really know, I would assume someone of his standing and prowess made the decision himself,” she explains.

“But Charlie’s like the cat that’s got the cream. I actually did the audition with Charlie and he was just so into it. He’s a super-fan of the English version, so he slotted in so well, we just had a great time. He’s so quick, and he’s also generous and quick to laugh as well. I think he might take great joy in cracking me up, which he’s also very good at.

“Frank Woodley is just a genius and a gentleman, and he’s given me one of the great highlights of my career, I reckon… he’s got ants in his pants. He can crack me up, and the audience up, with one look. I mean, he’s just one of a kind.”

Guests this season include Jackie Lambie, Christopher Pyne, Luke McGregor and Rebecca Gibney.

“Politicians you’ll find this season are extraordinarily good at a tall tale, which should surprise no one,” Swan warns, as she admits she hasn’t yet gleaned how to spot a liar.

“I’m a firm believer in the old adage, truth is stranger than fiction. And in my line of work, I’ve heard more than my fair share of stories, because I’ve spoken to so many more people than the average person does in their lifetime. So I tend to err on the side of, ‘I believe you. This could absolutely have happened.’ Because the strangest things do happen,” she continues.

Season Two will also introduce a new game in the series, based on the UK original hosted by Rob Brydon.

Swan is yet to hear any word from the British host about his thoughts on the Aussie series, but she’s also perfectly fine with that.

“I don’t know if he prefers not to interfere or he prefers not to know! But, I’m grateful for that because I feel like I would be very intimidated by Rob Brydon!”

Or there’s always the option to lie to him, right?

Would I Lie to You? Australia returns 8:40pm Monday on 10.

  1. This was a flop the first time around. Hard to see it working again. Too many ads and repetitive guests that are on all of the other panel shows (HYBPA, L&N, The Project, Spicks etc.). It’s a no from me.

  2. This show is worth persevering with. The British version took a few seasons to warm up. Would love to see people like Andrew Denton / Greig Pickhaver / John Doyle / Shaun Micallef….old blokes who can think on their feet.

  3. I love the UK show. Aussie show is weaker. I don’t think Chrissie is a good host because she’s not a comedian or good at improv. Rob Brydon could easily be a team captain on the UK show. I think those skills really help with being the host.

    1. Totally agree. I watch the UK episodes over and over and still get a laugh (and sometimes still forget if they’re lie or true) but something is missing from this series, I never want to watch the episodes more than once. Charlie will be a great asset, but they really need to replace Chrissy, I like her but not with this it needs to be a comedian. Sam Pang would be a brilliant choice, he’d be perfect.

  4. Replacing Chris with another bland male elite is a wasted opportunity and booking politicians isn’t likely to bring new eyes.
It’s like an ABC show ABC viewers won’t watch.
