Report: The Night Manager poised for renewal

7 years after it first premiered, UK spy drama looks set for a return.

A second season of The Night Manager with Tom Hiddleston looks like finally coming to fruition.

While the idea of a second season was first reported in 2016, US media now suggest a two-season order is in the wings for BBC First and Prime Video, with filming expected later this year in London and South America.

Season 1 wrapped with British arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) being taken away by the Syrians at the end but a new season would see Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) informed he is dead two years later, and must face up to a new, deadlier challenge.

There go new 007 theories, one presumes…

The series also starring Olivia Colman & Elizabeth Debicki screened in Australia on both BBC First and SBS, which Free TV once claimed as being “Off Charter” for the public broadcaster.

  1. It’s certainly taken some time to green light this second season, possibly because of Mr. Hiddleston’s demand as an actor, maybe?, anyway Tom gave one of the better ‘Bond’ impersonations seen on the small screen, so it was unsurprising that at least one rather clever fake fan trailer has been made with edited scenes from The Night Manager to give Hiddleston a convincing appearance as the famous British spy, or it certainly convinced me, James Bond should be creatively preserved as a British alpha male just as Ian Fleming wrote him.
The Night Manager probably wouldn’t have been quite as charismatic without the supporting cast, most notably Elizabeth Debicki, this show helped to get her better noticed. Hugh Laurie just played another version of himself.
I’m not sure how the screenplay writers will recycle the Night Manager title but I will look forward to their efforts all the same.

  2. Thoroughly enjoyed this show but they took their time deciding on another season, I was disappointed and thought it was done and dusted never going to happen or return. Glad they’ve decided on a second season.

  3. This was repeated on SBS numerous times, as recently as last month-it makes utterly no sense for a 2nd season though, as the Hiddleston character was not a professional and was only involved due to personal reasons including his relationship with the gorgeous Liz D. They wouldn’t want or need the aggravation!

      1. I mean he wasn’t a spy/intelligence officer-just a civilian with utterly no reason to get involved with such a dangerous thing again, especially with his wife and adopted child (assuming they don’t get bumped off to provide a reason that thus nullifies the end of the 1st season),

  4. Exciting. I thought The Night Manager was clearly better than Bodyguard, which was the other standout British miniseries of the past decade. Hugh Laurie will be a huge loss though.
