Swedish crime drama Alex and Taiwanese romance Fragrance of the First Flower screen this week at SBS on Demand.

As the first Taiwanese series to be selected in 2021’s Series Mania program, Fragrance of the First Flower is considered a milestone in Queer representation.

Despite his world crumbling around him, Alex is determined to leave his past as a ruthless and corrupt police officer behind. When gangsters, who are his former colleagues, continue to pursue him and threaten his family he is forced to reckon with the consequences of his past actions without the breaking law again. After reuniting at a mutual wedding, Yi-Ming (Zaizai Lin) and Ting-Ting (Lyan Cheng) find themselves swept up in what could have been. Re-kindling a long-forgotten high-school relationship, the two must navigate their changing lives. Stuck within the confines of motherhood and being a wife, Yi-Ming is searching for more, and following Ting-Ting’s footsteps seems to work, until it’s revealed Ting-Ting isn’t who she had led on to be. Fragrance Of The First Flower is a sensual and tender exploration of female sexuality and desire, revealing the love and lust between two women, the conflicts between gay, family and traditional stereotypes.
