US actor Charles Kimbrough, best known for Murphy Brown, has died.

US actor Charles Kimbrough, best known for Murphy Brown, has died aged 86.

His son confirmed the news to the New York Times, saying his father had passed away on January 11 in California but no cause of death has been released.

Kimbrough (pictured, right) played trustworthy but cranky veteran TV anchor Jim Dial on Murphy Brown from 1989 – 1998, delivering the news alongside Candice Bergen’s title character. His performance led to an Emmy nomination. He reprised the role as a recurring character in the 2018 reboot led by Bergen.

There were guest roles in Kojak, All My Children, American Playhouse, Spenser: For Hire, Another World, before his break on Murphy Brown, but he got his start in Repertory Theatre then Broadway and off-Broadway roles.

Later he became voice talent on in productions such as Dinosaurs, Mighty Max, Pinky and the Brain, Recess, Hercules, The Angry Beavers, Batman Beyond, Family Guy, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins.
