Great Expectations: trailer

First look at Charles Dickens classic from Steven Knight, Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy.

A trailer has been released for Great Expectations, featuring Olivia Colman, which is set to screen in Australia on Foxtel.

The six part drama is a co-production between FX and BBC, from producers Steven Knight, Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy and more.

Great Expectations is the coming-of-age story of Pip (Fionn Whitehead), an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life until a twist of fate introduces him to the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) and Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin), showing him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be.

Steven Knight said, “Adapting Dickens’ work is a delight. I chose Great Expectationsvvvvvv as the next work to bring to the screen not just because of the timeless characters, but also because of the very timely story. A story of class mobility and class intransigence, told through an intensely emotional and personal first person narrative. As the son of a Blacksmith myself, Pip’s journey from the forge into society is a very special one to me.”

A date is yet to be set.

  1. Not exactly something that needs a synopsis. There have been 10 film versions, 8 TV shows (5 by the BBC), a Disney TVM, an animated version and even episode of South Park of Great Expectations. Except for South Park episode they are all historical dramas set in 1881 because none of the story or characters makes sense except at that time. Other than being in a pretentious 21:9 ratio for 16:9 TVs this version is unlikely to add anything. They could use Dicken’s superior original ending.

      1. You could even write it and who knows in years to come it might become a vintage classic too. But bare in mind it might be subjected the trend of taking out the nasty bitter bits. 🤔

  2. I would love to know what Miriam Margolyes take on this series is, she’s an avid Dickens fan and has done a one woman show in which she played 23 different characters then later retraced Dickens journey across America. Olivia Coleman is a great choice but anything Tom Hardy does is just as great. This will be an interesting adaptation to see how a classic fits into today’s narrative.

    1. Nicely put, but adapting a literary classic into today’s narrative usually means having to create another universe, and this BBC show looks to be another example, Apparently Charles Dickens was not a socialist as some modern commentators believed, but he was writing stories for social justice, so maybe this adaption of his work would please him.
