Jason Derulo: “Shows based on singing alone not the real world.”

Awkward. New Voice judge doesn't have a very high opinion of talent shows that are based on the voice.

US singer Jason Derulo has made comments about singing shows which appear to be at odds with his upcoming role on The Voice, announced on the weekend by Seven.

Derulo is also a judge on upcoming BBC talent show, Project Icon which he created and judges alongside his long-time business partner music mogul Frank Harris and Brit Award winner, Becky Hill.

The show leaves the shiny floor studios behind and instead throws its aspiring artists into the ‘real world’ of today’s music industry. Unsigned artists will compete against each other in a series of industry-inspired challenges: everything from creating viral social media videos, to tricky press interviews and of course the ability to perform on UK’s stages.

But in publicity materials Derulo says, “…over the last 20 years, the ratio isn’t very high in terms of having successful artists from singing shows. I think the reason why is because the shows are largely based on singing alone, and that’s not the real world, we live in a world where people are attracted to not only someone’s voice, but also a song, someone’s personality, what they do on social media.”

Those comments appear to have been supplied to BBC probably before he signed with Seven for The Voice, a show that is famously, all about the singing alone.

Derulo is replacing Keith Urban and joining Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy and Rita Ora.

  1. It’s possible that he had been critical in order to improve the reality singing shows and output. If it helps to revive the level of success for artists, then it’s a good thing. Maybe it’s a good idea for The Voice to also focus on the personality, lifestyle and social media following, as well as the singing.

I think that’s good advice to follow and not a negative or pulling the shows down, but improving them. That shows he may be a good judge after all.

  2. The Voice would be starting to feel fatigue with Australian audiences as it’s been a few years on Seven now since it had its Summer Olympics lead in. Australian Idol has also added further fatigue. I won’t be surprised if The Voice sinks this year.

  3. I know the words are attributed to Jason and he would have endorsed them, but it would have been a BBC comms person who wrote them to try and differentiate the new show from all the other multitude of other talents shows we’ve seen before.

  4. Just shows what people will do for money. He probably thinks no one will know he is in Australia judging the Voice.
Doesn’t make him a very credible mentor to potential team members if he doesn’t believe in the process
