Religious protest outside Network 10

Despite a joke in Melbourne studios, protestors took to 10's Sydney base to cal for The Project's cancellation.

The joke which offended many took place in 10’s Melbourne studio two weeks ago, but yesterday some 600 protestors took to 10’s Sydney studio in Saunder St, Pyrmont.

With a state election imminent in NSW, protestors included the Christian Lives Matter group and 88 year old member of the New South Wale Legislative Council Revered Fred Nile, called for The Project‘s cancellation. But Rev. Nile collapsed before being taken away by ambulance.

The 10 show had already apologised for the joke made by Reuben Kaye but some protestors described it as “a mockery” and called for a “sincere apology.”

Kaye spoke on The Project about the hate he is subjected to because of his sexuality and for dressing up in drag – mostly from the Christian community – when he made the Jesus remark.

  1. Well news.com.au has pretty much spurred on anti-Project articles daily prior to this happening, so the Herald-Sun and Sky News crowd have been whipped up for a while now. It’s always interesting when those crying for free speech don’t like what they hear. I did see that episode and admit I was taken aback too by the joke. But all that really achieved is me thinking, “Well I wouldn’t see his show.”

  2. They are protesting in Sydney because they are from Sydney where the Anglican and Catholic churches are more conservative, and because they are demanding 10’s head office to cancel The Project. I doubt that this is going to help the Projects numbers by much, it survives because anything else 10 can think of would rate worse. They are are perfectly entitled to protest peacefully, it’s just not going to achieve anything.

  3. The outcry for that “joke” on a show not many watch is getting too much. We get it. But i guess kudos to Seven News for showing a rival program.

Also, just a heads up to some readers: The Project is filmed in Sydney on Sundays and some Fridays. And has done so for some time now.

  4. “During prime-time, the guest used the crucifixion of Jesus as a source of ridicule and derision. Presented as a ‘joke’, the crude remark was of a sexual nature and highly inappropriate” Archbishop Fisher wrote to 10. Oddly I can’t find any definition of “nailed” that is “of a sexual nature”.

  5. What better way to promote yourself and get all the politically correct wokiest to sit up and take notice. Rueben achieved that in spades. It sure hit a nerve, they’ve even deleted the segment from YouTube which I admit I did comment on and I even got a great reply from a Dave Spanksalot. 👍 Charlie Pickering summed it nicely on his show on the ABC. If nothing else The Project is getting plenty of mileage out of this.

  6. Why would you protest on a Saturday when no one is in the building and everyone has the day off, and The Project is filmed and produced in Melbourne so they would have been better off doing it there on a day when The Project is going to air live. Protestors shouldn’t hate on gay people because of this either, it was one stupid comment from one silly guest that 10 shouldn’t have had on, and 10 would get that now. Sarah just laughed because she was shocked and was taken by surprise on live tv.

  7. Oh give it a F*&%ing rest already!!!

How long ago did this air now?! Was it offensive? Yes, Was it also funny? Yes.

Did any of these people that protested actually watch it when it aired? Highly doubtful.

And if they did, did they have a chuckle before being outraged? Highly probable!

A protest outside a TV network does nothing, having worked at a TV Network where this has happened, it just gives the employees a good laugh for the day!

  8. I posted on this in The Lounge on Saturday, how prayers failed Fred, firstly for rain on the Mardi Gras parade and again disrupting his rantings on Saturday. To quote TEN ex-GM Robert Lord when Number 96 protestors picketed TEN, when security asked if they should call the cops. “Good Lord No. I love this free publicity. And look, even channel 9 is here too! Everybody’s here”.

  9. Interesting to see this Seven News coverage considering Nine News ran the story without mentioning it was happening outside Ten and was about The Project. Also fascinating that there is still such “outrage” two weeks later, suggesting that to me it’s not so much the joke that’s still causing anger, but more the fact that it came from a queer comedian.
