Family, friends, farewell Barry Humphries

A small private funeral for showbiz legend Barry Humphries was held yesterday in NSW Southern Highlands.

Family and friends of Barry Humphries farewelled the showbiz legend at a small private funeral yesterday, held at the estate of longtime friend and artist Tim Storrier in Bowral.

The Australian reports wife, Lizzie Spender, is set to leave for London today and guests were only told on Thursday night of funeral arrangements.

In attendance were Humphries’ two sons, Oscar and Rupert, who flew in from London, daughters Emily and Tessa, brother Christopher and sister Barbara.

Film director Bruce Beresford said no speeches were made, but excerpts from some of Barry’s favourite poems were read, including three verses from his favourite poem, The Heart of a Friend by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

“It was very touching, very warm. Everybody was either related or a great friend of Barry’s,” he said.

The Victorian government has offered a State Funeral / Memorial but it isn’t clear if this will proceed.

On Tuesday SBS screens Barry Humphries’ final screen credit in Who Do You Think You Are?

  1. Everyone in the public eye has a private life. If this is what he and his family wanted that is their choice not the public’s. I think it was a beautiful gesture to have a private gathering for family and friends, read his favourite poems and farewell him in their own way because they knew him best. It’s also their decision on a state funeral or not and the public need to respect that decision too. He won’t be forgotten because he bought laughter and light to the entire world. 🕊️
