“We did learn our lesson with Shane”

Agreeing to let Shane Warne smoke in the jungle backfired on I'm a Celebrity producers.

There’s been quite a bit of talk around clauses in I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here contracts giving some cast members extra privileges which have led to on air conflict.

It comes despite Shane Warne given smoking privileges during his 2016 appearance.

“We did learn our lesson with Shane. He was really quite open with us. He said, ‘Look, I want to do the show. I can’t give up smoking and want to give up smoking. So I need to be able to smoke,'” Head of Entertainment Stephen Tate told TV Tonight.

“So we agreed that we would create a smoking area that was never on camera and only one person was ever allowed in it.

“But the moment the rest of the camp found out the entire camp became smokers, and they all wanted to smoke, all of a sudden. Whilst we never let them smoke together, because that meant that we weren’t getting content, it was really bad for the production because we had people out of the scenes throughout every day.”

In his autobiography Warne revealed he was paid $2m to appear the show, a figure that totalled the entire budget for the previous year’s cast. He also said Advanced Hair flew out to the bush midway through filming to redo his hair.

This year producers agreed to let Kerri-Anne Kennerley, 69, use make-up and was reportedly excused from some physical challenges after recently undergoing knee surgery.

Tate acknowledged “one significant compromise” seen in the first week of the show.

  1. I knew that Shane Warne (and possibly Anthony Callea) were smoking during I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, but I never had any idea that all cast members were allowed to smoke during the season (albeit individually!) You really do learn something new every day!

  2. Oh! ….to be a celebrity and all that comes with it …..an explanation of what a “Celebrity” is according to the book….Dead Famous by historian Greg Jenner sums it up……Celebrity (noun) A unique person made widely known to the public via media coverage, “whose life is publicly consumed” and who’s commercial brand is made profitable by those “who exploit their popularity and perhaps also themselves” ….Or a one famous person once said…”We are more famous than Jesus”……
Just let the man rest in peace.

  3. The flip side is that if they never let Shane smoke he may not of done the show. They need to let the big stars have a few things otherwise you are left with C grade reality stars that not everyone knows. Shane was so good on that show and it was that show that I seen the real Shane Warne and I really liked him. People like Shane and Kerri-Anne don’t really need the money or publicity so can easily so no.
