7News Spotlight: May 7

This Sunday Daniel Morcombe’s 2003 disappearance, Jim Jefferies and the Markles again.

On 7News Spotlight are stories on Daniel Morcombe’s 2003 disappearance from former reporter Denham Hitchcock, plus Jim Jefferies and the Markles again with Liam Bartlett.

He was Australia’s little boy lost for eight agonisingly long years, abducted as he waited to catch a bus and go Christmas shopping for his loving family.

Daniel Morcombe’s 2003 disappearance gripped the nation, while his devastated parents Bruce and Denise inspired us all with their stoicism and national child safety campaign.

So, when convicted paedophile Brett Peter Cowan confessed to kidnapping and killing the innocent teen, his lifetime jail sentence felt like the sad end to a heartbreaking tale.

Now, in a 7NEWS Spotlight major new investigation to air 8.30pm this Sunday on Channel 7 and 7plus, fresh evidence about the botched police search to find Daniel is set to shatter hearts all over again.

In the latest blow to confidence in the Queensland Police Force, a former officer steps forward to blow the lid off the bungling of Daniel’s missing persons case.

Speaking for the first time, the whistleblower was one of two young officers who fingered Cowan for the crime from the start, taking a detailed report to detectives just two weeks after Daniel was snatched from a Sunshine Coast highway.

What happened next will outrage anyone who kept vigil for Daniel for nearly a decade.

Also, get to know Australian comedy’s bad boy, Jim Jefferies, who has won over the country as host of Seven’s top-rating quiz show, The 1% Club.

7NEWS Spotlight’s Liam Bartlett sits down with the rogue funny man, who is taking on cancel culture and introduces us to the woman who has managed to tame the wild one.

For royal watchers, The Markles continue their attack on rogue sister Meghan, sharing more intimate revelations from her first marriage.

8:30pm Sunday on Seven.

  1. Typo on Daniel comment “ the makers” not marks….that’s the Apple Pencil running out of juice and predictive test taking over.. and they say technology is a wonder thing.

  2. The film The Stranger was a fictionalised version of events about the undercover police operation to catch the murder and Daniel’s parents “demanded “ the marks stop using his name to make the film and I think this should be the case with Spotlight. The family certainly don’t need the events being dragged up so viewers are “entertained “. They do great work with their foundation and I for one don’t think it needs to be looked at again unless the Morcombes approve it because here in Queensland justice has been served and Cowan is languishing in a jail cell….give the Morcombes some respect.

    1. The family participated in a story on their son’s botched search. Airing issues that could have saved them 8 years of waiting is important to prevent in future cases. That was clearly important to them.

      1. Completely understand, we had years of being informed by the media of this despicable crime here in Brisbane and watching his parents suffer it was heartbreaking. I attended a ball at City Hall in honour of Danial and his parents are absolute champions but I always think of dragging up the past with these types of shows and causing more heartbreak for those who have to deal with it everyday of their of lives. I just can’t watch. Let’s hope it does prevent what happened in this future. Thanks for that David.

  3. Bring on Jim Jefferies, a comedian who doesn’t play it safe. This is what the world needs right now. And as for the comment about his ailing show, that title is rightly ascribed to the dud known as Hot Seat. Can’t wait to see it being sent to the scrap heap.

    1. I appreciate JJs comedy is not for everyone but the early ratings are strong for 1% club – especially the 7 day numbers for the first show (I guess we shall wait for the numbers for the second show) – but even the overnights are more then solid and I’m sure a relief for seven. JJ’s bit on gun control in the US from a decade ago is timeless and wet your pants funny.

      1. Good point about the ratings for The 1% Club. The show appears to be doing well so far, and that has to be, in least in part, thanks to Jim Jefferies and his unique brand of comedy.
