Blow Up last in slot behind SBS …as primetime trails Sunrise.

Three shows, head to head by the same production company, is not necessarily a win, with the bubble burst in Overnight figures.

Yesterday aftermoon OzTAM issued VOZ numbers for Monday’s viewing which saw Seven’s new Blow Up close a gap with The Summit once national and BVOD figures had been added.

But that may not be enough to save the show given its new Overnight figures for Tuesday are quite disastrous.

The show finished 5th in its slot behind SBS… even Sunrise in the morning drew a better number.

All of that is taking the focus off The Summit which is also under-performing in Overnights for Nine. It was better news for 10 leading in two evening slots and their demos.

MasterChef Australia led at 492,000 then 7:30 (438,000), The Summit (428,000), The ABC Of (338,000), Who Do You Think You Are? (243,000) and Blow Up (224,000).

Later The Cheap Seats was in front at 399,000 then Ningaloo Nyinggulu (327,000) and The Rescue (208,000).

Nine network won Tuesday with 28.4% then Seven 24.9%, 10 19.2%, ABC 17.4% and SBS 10.1%.

Nine News (835,000 / 813,000) was best for Nine with A Current Affair at 666,000. Hot Seat drew 440,000 / 263,000.

Seven News was #1 with 945,000 / 881,000 while The Chase topped entertainment (552,000) and Home & Away was 440,000. The Rookie was 191,000 then The Rookie: Feds (194,000).

The Project pulled 302,000 / 209,000 for 10. 10 News First was 227,000 / 168,000 with NCIS at 140,000.

ABC News drew 573,000. Monsters Or Medicine? (184,000) and The Drum (151,000) followed.

On SBS it was Insight (159,000), SBS World News (141,000 / 114,000), Dateline (105,000) and Mastermind (90,000).

Peppa Pig led multichannels at 132,000.

Sunrise: 226,000
Today: 192,000
News Breakfast: 91,000 / 39,000

In Total TV numbers last Tuesday were:

The Good Doctor: 508,000
NCIS: 265,000
Who Do You Think You Are?:  378,000
MasterChef Australia:  875,000

  1. I hope Stephen Curry has a back up gig on standby. I’ve liked his work ever since I first saw him in The Castle over two decades ago and it’s a shame he was lumbered with this turkey of a concept.

One good thing at least… It’s one less ad that features a bleeeeping Tones and I song torturing the poor home viewers.

  2. LEGO Masters joked about this before it even happened. In the Disney challenge when a team made a Lego model of the house from “Up” Hamish and Brickman said “Balloons! Do you think there’s a whole show in that? Nahhhh!” 🤣

  3. Reality us scrapping the bottom of the barrell. At least cooking shows encourage us to cook better. The Biggest Looser helped us loose weight. The Block encouraged us to do home renovations. Blowing balloons helps us how?? What’s next, how many ways we can fold paper??

    1. I’ve enjoyed (in passing) the glass blowing show on netflix and the knife/blade making show that viceland had shown – Niche talent shows can have their place but they really shouldn’t be used as major tent pole shows shown multiple times a week.

      1. There was a show on the ABC about 45 years ago demonstrating/teaching origami-it enjoyed a rise in popularity in the West about then…

  4. Another problem with the Blow Up concept – do that many people really make things out of balloons? In comparison, everyone cooks, and a lot of adults still build things with Lego too – hence the continuing appeal of Masterchef and Lego Masters.

  5. I think we can be certain that Blow Up will be relegated to Bravo or Seven Mate next week, but do Seven have anything to replace it with in that 7.30PM timeslot(and I don’t mean repeats of the best of Russell Gilbert)?
Some bright spark at Seven obviously thought they could replicate the success of Lego Masters by substituting Lego for balloons, but the concept was always doomed to failure. Stephen Curry must wonder what on earth he was doing there?
Does anyone else watch the Drum regularly? Judging by the ratings, not very many, but I think giving the hosting gig to John Barron and Dan Bouchier has been a plus for that format, they both moderate the panels rather well.

  6. Blow Up clearly blew up in Seven’s face. I watched the opening ep and found it so boring. I was not really interested. Its honestly a series better suited for Netflix not FTA. As for The Summit, well i tried that too. Think its terrible (and its more to do with who they cast). I won’t be watching either from here on in.

  7. I am enjoying The Summit. It was great viewing watching Jackie get chucked off. I was so over her constantly saying she was 5 time world champion. Came off as the villan of the piece. Guessing she is coming back for revenge??

  8. I have officially given up on The Summit, last night it revealed itself to be like most reality show when nastiness along with the strategy was brought in to play, always seems to happen when money is involved , a sad indictment on human beings. Ningaloo Nynggulu was fabulous, looking forward to the rest of the series.

  9. I haven’t watched Blow Up but this is what I make of it compared with Lego Masters

    3 lacklustre hosts nobody knows.
    Experts rather than “normal” contestsnts
Many people grew up with Lego or other building bricks but not balloon blowing
You can buy lego anywhere and involve the whole family. Not many enjoy inflating a balloon.
When you see balloon artistes at the show you only stay for a few minutes while they make one item then your attention span is lost.

Next we’ll have a reality competition for circus clowns or lion tamers.

    1. Well, we can juggle with the circus clowns or sink our teeth in to the lion tamers performance. But I am thinking many people have clown phobias and animals are used less in circuses these days. 😉

    2. A one night only competition for lion tamers could be interesting. As for circus clowns, I could totally see Seven trying a reality competition based around them. I doubt it would rate well, but that didn’t stop them from producing this balloon show.

  10. What was the result for Blow up with the Voz & national numbers. I can definitely see this go to 7flix next week, but what does 7 have to replace it?

  11. We’re invested in The Summit in our household now. The cast have been well chosen and production is tight. But ultimately it’s the NZ scenery that is the winner. The waterfalls in the snow capped peaks that were the backdrop for the past 2 nights have been spectacular.
Twitter is on fire during the eps which makes for interesting and lively banter!

  12. Remarkable results all round. The Summit builds on premiere in episode 3. How is that underperforming? Blow Up is a disaster. When was the last time Seven ran 5th behind SBS?

  13. i don’t watch “reality” much..but i really like”the summit”, as much as a travelogue of new zealand as anything else.having said that..is it much different from say “the amazing race”,”survivor”,”the bridge”…that 9 and endemol would be hoping they could sell this format elsewhere?the overnights are creeping up.and a last thing..do production companies and networks ever reveal the costs of these series?it sure seems that this show’s costs of production would be pretty dear.

    1. I think I said it on the Sunday … it is The Bridge – Replace Bridge Building with Mountain Climbing, replace flares with helicopters, replace Hugo Weaving narrating with Jai Courtney in person.

Even as someone enjoying the show well enough and someone inclined to enjoy the genre of these Reality Game shows (including those you cited), being a realist you have to admit the obvious Bridge comparison.

      1. yeah..i remember someone citing “the bridge”..that’s why i included it in the list in my comment.having not watched it tho…my question remains…do you think 9 and endemol would hope this format is different enough that it might get sold elsewhere?i mean how many locales could you come up with to equal this one?just as a complete non sequitur..and i’m probably completely out to lunch on this(so what else is new?)every time i see that helicopter, and not seeing any pilot,i get a sense of foreboding and think back on that truck in “duel”..the great speilberg tv movie from about 50 years ago.

  14. Summit may be underperforming but it is up on launch and Ep2. You rarely see that on a stripped reality show.

While I’m still warming up to the show (it’s good and I see potential but it’s not amazing, yet) but wouldn’t be surprised to see it grow (both in streaming and as the season goes on)

  15. Lauching The Summit against the finale of what had been a particularly strong season of Farmer seemed like an odd decision on Nine’s part.
