10 has poached ABC’s Ashleigh Raper to become its new Network Political Editor, replacing Peter Van Onselen who departed in March.
Most recently she has been NSW State Political Reporter for ABC, having joined the broadcaster in 2008.
During that time she has reported from the Orange, Newcastle, Darwin and Sydney newsrooms, covering news across landmark legislation, resignations, leadership spills and the recent NSW state election. She has also held varying roles including Triple J newsreader and TV newsreader in the NT.
At 10 she will lead the network’s political coverage on 10 News First, and also feature on The Project and Studio 10.
Martin White, Head of Broadcast News, Paramount Australia and New Zealand, said: “Ashleigh’s track record speaks for itself. She’s a journo of the highest quality, with a history of covering big political stories and elections. I’m thrilled she’s joining 10 and can’t wait for her to get started.”
Ashleigh said: “It’s a dream come true to head to the nation’s capital and cover politics at a time when the issues are impacting people like never before.
“I can’t wait to join Network 10 and the team in Canberra.”
She will commence in her new role next month.

Yet another reason to stop watching ABC News…I am a huge fan of this young lady and also Andrew Probyn…
Sounds like Ashleigh chose the right time to jump ship.
Given what has gone down at the ABC, she is probably very relieved to have moved to Ten before she could have been laid off.
Totally a fan of this young woman…..I will watch…where ever she lands.
Wow! I am generally shocked. I did not expect that at all when I clicked on the title. That is a big scoop for 10, and a very different personality compared to the previous political editor, that’s for sure. I am definitely going to tune into 10 news more to see what Ashleigh does in her new role.
Right at the same time as ABC announcing a restructure……
It makes sense in that she had been in the state politics role for a while and there is not obvious sign the ABC Canberra team was going to chance anytime soon. Ashleigh had done some news reading roles for the NSW bulletins on occasion and I interpreted this as a “talent test”. I thought she did well. Better role but for a lessor news brand. But assuming she does as well for ten as she did for ABC, and with multiple platforms on ten, every chance she will be snapped up by seven or nine in a couple of years.
So no sooner do I type no obvious signs of ABCs Canberra team changing, Andrew Probyn is let go. I enjoyed his reporting.
That seems like a big step up having never reported Federal politics to Network Political Editor. There will be a lot of current employee’s noses put out of joint I would imagine.
She’s a good get for them. Bound to be across Federal as well when politics is in your blood.
Agreed. She should be quite knowledgeable about federal politics as well as NSW politics. I doubt that Ten would have hired her if she wasn’t.
