Airdate: Wally Lewis: The King

Wide World of Sports opens its archives for a doco on a rugby league legend.

Next week Nine will screen Wally Lewis: The King, a tribute to rugby league legend and former Nine News sports presenter, Wally Lewis.

Director Alex Rolls, said: “The next feature film in our Wide World of Sports Special Presentation series will give Australia the chance to see the legend that is Wally Lewis like they’ve never seen him before.

“A fearless warrior on the field, King Wally is incredibly open, honest and engaging in this fitting tribute. It’s a compelling story which has to be told and needs to be seen.”

Regarded by many as rugby league’s greatest ever player, his legendary achievements in State of Origin remain unmatched. Yet Wally’s life has been far from easy, despite the incredible on-field success.

A stellar cast of football greats including Wayne Bennett, Paul Vautin, Gene Miles, Phil Gould, Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler join Wally’s parents and many others to tell their part in his extraordinary life.

Wally Lewis – The King features footage never previously unearthed from the Wide World of Sports archives in telling this emotional, uplifting story, which chronicles Wally’s rapid rise to fame, his daughter being born profoundly deaf and his own health battles, all while the sporting world watched on in wonder at his astonishing football achievements.
