PM’s Daughter on show at Parliament House

ABC and NITV talent will join an Australian Children’s Television Foundation Showcase tonight at Parliament House.

Cast members, children, members of parliament and screen industry professionals will gather for the Australian Children’s Television Foundation 2023 Showcase at the APH Theatre, Parliament House this evening.

The event will be presented by Minister for the Arts Tony Burke and ACTF Board Chair Helen Silver and will feature children’s content, including an episode of the second season of ABC ME political-comedy drama The PM’s Daughter,. It will also screen episodes of preschool animations Little J & Big Cuz, Kangaroo Beach and Barrumbi Kids.

Special guests include The PM’s Daughter star Cassandra Helmot, actor Aaron Fa’Aoso, who voices Old Dog in Little J & Big Cuz, and Neville and Pounce from Kangaroo Beach.

The event is being held not only to showcase  children’s content , but to thank the Government for its ongoing support of children’s television and to highlight the value in the continued investment in Australian stories.

ACTF Chair Helen Silver said: “Australians produce exceptional children’s content, including both animation and live action children’s drama, as a direct result of the Government policies and funding which underpin our industry. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the breadth and diversity of our screen industry’s offering to children, and the shows we’ve been supporting over the last few years.

“Quality children’s content entertains, engages and inspires young audiences, and we know that it has many supporters in Parliament House. But there is nothing like bringing the shows, and children to watch the shows, into the building itself to demonstrate the value of investing in quality Australian children’s content.”

  1. I met Tony Burke many years ago in Canberra. I remember the interaction didn’t go overly smoothly due to minor misunderstandings and technicalities. Though I think he would be the most appropriate person in Labor for the relevant portfolios, and has a keen interest in the field of communications and arts.

Going back further to about 2008, the discussion about the premise of ABC 3 (ME) was that the children we’re not getting the quality of children’s programming that parents grew up with. Did it live entirely to the premise? I think the answer is whether programs like The PM’s Daughter and elicit the same excitement, enjoyment and capturing of the imagination as Lift Off, Round The Twist, The Ferals, Captain Planet, Mot and so on did.

It’s important that the children like it, and not for the sake of churning out or programming generic children’s content.

  2. “Quality children’s content entertains, engages and inspires young audiences” works for this old viewer also…I enjoy a number of children’s shows..The PMs Daughter at the top of my list.
