Seven pauses Home & Away for Million Dollar Island premiere

Summer Bay drama won't screen on Monday night as Seven unveils its next reality contest.

Seven’s premiere of Million Dollar Island next Monday has been allocated to a 7pm timeslot, as the network holds off Home & Away for one night.

This moves the show away from head to head competition -at least initially- with MasterChef Australia and Parental Guidance.

Last time Seven held off its Summer Bay episodes for other programming, such as My Kitchen Rules, there was a bit of a backlash from soapie fans.

But after the failure of Blow Up it looks like Seven is taking no chances, and determined to give the new reality show from Eureka its best lead in with Seven News.

Hosted by Ant Middelton and filmed in Malaysia, it sees 100 contestants in the quest for a $1m prize. All three episodes next week run for 90 minutes.

  1. I will not be watching Million dollar Island
What’s the point in having other Channels like 72 and 7mate and 7flix if they’re gonna cancel Home & Away for other pointless shows
7pm weeknights is always home & Away so use another Channel to Broadcast Million Dollar Island
It’s bad enough last Thursday the 8th of June there was only 1 episode of home & away instead of the 3 episodes they usually have and now cancelling tonight’s episode – or why not show home and away on 72 tonight ??
    This makes me angry 😡

    1. If they had triple episodes of Home and Away every Thursday, the show would finish for the year earlier. They can’t make enough episodes for 6 episodes a week, every week. They have to line up with the same amount for other countries – as in, 5 episodes a week. It looks like, initially, this Thursday was meant to be one episode, but it is now a double to make up for tonight. So this week we are getting the same amount of episodes that we would have got if they screened an episode tonight.

  2. Hate this! It’s bad enough having the 3 on Thursday instead of having Fridays still. But to miss out for another stupid survivor style show 🤬 Better homes and gardens used to run after home and away. Pauses for footy, tennis, commonwealth games and olympics are annoying too. But at least predicted yearly events that don’t go forever. I often watch on the app anyway less adds, so why not just put the other crap on a duplicate channel. Why on earth do we even have those! We used to have reruns on one all day. But it’s usually the same crap. I don’t even watch anything else on free to air at all. This is my one 30minutes of do not speak to me till the add break! And with 6 others in my house I need this escape! They need to bring back kids and the high school though. Bit odd!

    1. I mean to be fair, if you watch on the app, you don’t have to watch all 2 or 3 on Thursday and you can hold them off for your Friday and watch as they suit you anyway.

  3. I will not be watching Million Dollar Island we don’t need anymore reality rubbish on our screens at night I will probably be watching The Project for the whole hour because my favourite Aussie Soap is not on that night

    1. You don’t think it’s appealing when 100 contestants all have a $10,000 bracelet and they have to play challenges and manipulate each other to try to get other people’s bracelets. To then get to the stage where probably at least one person has all 100 bracelets to be able to win the 1 million dollars.

      1. Sorry no they look like adults screaming over each other just for money. Have we lowered our standard when this is TV. Also Ant Middleton as a host hmmm just look up why he was no longer hosting SAS UK.

  4. Why wouldn’t they do this when they had success launching Farmer Wants A Wife at 7pm? Like it or lump it but audiences switch off Seven in droves at 7pm when the news ends and Home and Away starts. To give their tentpole reality shows the best chance of success they’d be mad not to try them at 7pm and halt Home and Away temporarily. Longer term it will need to move to 7TWO or maybe air twice a week in 90 and 60 minute blocks later in the week at 7.

    1. A bit harsh on H&A. Yes the overnight audience almost halves but it competes well with other 7pm FTA offerings and the 7 day numbers would make it comparable to 7 news. It is a gamble as H&A has delivered very good numbers for decades. Separately, I thought the deal 7 had with the uks channel 5 was to ensure both were at the same stage with their episodes (which is why seven have 3 back to back on Thursdays as I guess seven has to show 7 episodes per week)?

      1. The UK is weeks behind. When there are 3 episodes on a Thursday, that would make 6 episodes a week not 7. The 3 episodes on Thursdays are due to the low ratings on Fridays, the Football and an agreement with the makers of Better Homes and Gardens. It all works out and they show a third episode on the Thursdays to make up for times like this where they can show other things.

  5. It would also be due to Monday being the King’s Birthday Public Holiday. There has been a few times where Channel 7 didn’t screen Home and Away on a Public Holiday like at easter.

      1. True. I am just saying that the Public Holiday may have come into the decision, even though there are states not having it on that date. I love Home and Away but I don’t mind when it isn’t on. I can watch other thing. I will be recording Million Dollar Island and watching it on the weekend.

    1. There’s no public holiday for WA. Why should we miss out on an episode?? We had a public holiday yesterday and we still got an episode.

      1. It is just the way it is worked out. No one would be missing out on an episode. There will be the same amount of episodes this year was going to have and probably the same amount of episodes there are every year. They just have episode roll-out in a different way. Triple episodes on a lot of Thursdays and double or triple episodes at the end of the year, will make up for it. People will be away for the long weekend (in states where there is a long weekend) and they want to test Million Dollar Island at an earlier time to get in earlier than 7 and 10 7.30pm shows. No one is missing out, it is just how it is shown.

  6. I’ll say as a Survivor fan (and these social-elimination game shows in general), with a friend on the show, I’m at least curious by it, if slightly cynical. I will give it a go.

I hope it is at least better than Summit – it got tedious by the end with their overly long eps to cover story from such a small group (90 minute eps to cover 4-6 people by the end could have been more condense). MDI at least shouldn’t have that problem with 100 players

  7. After average to low results for The Bridge and The Summit, I don’t see anybody flocking to see more weirdos wandering the wild wilderness for weeks
