US actor Barry Newman, best known for Petrocelli and Vanishing Point, has died.

US actor Barry Newman, best known for Petrocelli and Vanishing Point, has died, aged 92.

His wife Angela confirmed he died of natural causes on May 11 in a New York hospital.

Following Broadway roles (including The Mousetrap) he was cast in 1971’s Vanishing Point, as a former race car driver who drives across the US while avoiding cops and getting entangled in a deadly criminal conspiracy. The film went on to become a cult classic.

He played lawyer Anthony J. Petrocelli in the legal series Petrocelli, from 1974 to ’76. He defended clients in court while living in an Arizona house trailer with wife Maggie (Susan Howard), while waiting for their new home to be built  -it never was completed over the course of the series.

Additional film credits included The Limey, Bowfinger, 40 Days and 40 Nights, Daylight and City on Fire.

Small screen credits included Get Smart, Quincy ME, Nightingales, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, The Fall Guy, The O.C., Murder She Wrote and Ghost Whisperer.

    1. Delta2113, I agree. Petrocelli also brings back happy memories of the whole family sitting together in front of the tv.

    2. Oh so sad. Loved Petrocelli and have been so disappointed that the show has never seemed to have been re run on any network or platform. Would love to watch it again, it’s so overlooked when lists of courtroom dramas are mentioned. I remember also that my mum and I were disappointed it was cancelled before he finished building his house haha. Yes Barry Newman was in the famous Groovy Guru episode of ‘Get Smart’ too.
