A bumper night of sport draws massive crowds as the Matildas win over Republic of Ireland. Nine scores with Ashes.

In case you hadn’t noticed, Thursday was one very big night of sport and a victory for the Matildas.

FIFA Women’s World Cup was #1 at 1.24m with the biggest crowd in Sydney (439,000) then Melbourne (373,000) and Brissy (222,000). Numbers will climb much higher in Total TV.

The Ashes Series was up to 546,000 across Nine network, both leaving rival networks on diminutive shares.

The Chase topped entertainment at 479,000 / 261,000.

7:30 drew 354,000 then Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly Australia (308,000).

Seven stormed the night at 40.3% then Nine 30.8%, 10 11.2%, ABC 10.3% and SBS 7.4%.

Seven News won with 827,000 / 813,000.

Nine News (778,000 / 774,000) was best for Nine. A Current Affair drew 679,000 then Hot Seat (380,000 / 244,000).

The Project pulled 248,000 / 167,000. 10 News First was 220,000 / 147,000. Law & Order: SVU managed 125,000 then a Cheap Seats replay (74,000).

ABC News was 511,000. A Life in Ten Pictures (149,000), The Drum (137,000), Grand Designs NZ (131,000), One Plus One (45,000).

On SBS it was SBS World News (130,000 / 83,000), Inside Sydney Airport (116,000), Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (83,000) and Tour de France (77,000).

The Morning Show: 148,000 / 117,000
Today Extra: 124,000 / 106,000

  1. Agreed, should not be behind a paywall. My partners Filo, and can’t watch their team playing at all on free to air, even if it was just on 7+ live would be fine.

Yes, I’m sure your comment has been repeated by many other football fans as well, as a major promo for women’s sports. which it has to be said has been receiving a lot of media and corporate investment lately, a major sporting code like football shouldn’t miss any chance to promote their game, especially if it’s a FIFA World Cup. Having the bulk of the live coverage of this FIFA event on Optus Sports obviously pays for the FIFA broadcast rights but I would think loses points when attracting interest in the game, especially after both host nations won their opening matches.

  2. The most attended stand alone women’s sporting crowd in Aus was the Women’s T20 at the MCG with 83k+ but this was definitely the attended women’s soccer/football match in Aus

  3. Those soccer figures should get higher with subsequent matches. Great result for women’s sport. May be getting carried away but it’s probably highest rating women’s sport match ever on Aussie tv right?
