Friday Flashback: “Put your manners back in”

In 2005 this interview between Tom Cruise and Peter Overton drew plenty of attention for the wrong reasons.

Tom Cruise has been busy chatting with Australian media this week for his new film, which is getting glowing reviews.

That’s all a bit chummier of course than a 60 Minutes chat Peter Overton conducted back in 2005 when a question about his private life prompted Cruise to famously tell him to “put your manners back in.”

Overton subsequently explained on the Kyle and Jackie O show in 2020: “I just maintained who I am, and I didn’t get angry. He did. And I just kept true to myself and said it’s a fair question.

“I hold no ill will towards Tom. It was one of those moments.”

  1. Well he asked about Nicole and Tom answered and it should of been left at that.. in fact should of been an agreement on what questions not to ask in interviews..

    1. He did request no questions about him & Nicole. Peter Overton went against it because he was ‘friends’ of Nicole’s. Hence the reply by Cruise.

  2. Not a big fan of Mr Cruise (or lamb roast either) but I thought he put Peter back “in his box” rather well…he wasn’t nasty, he kept his cool but very assertive and I did enjoy that…I’ve used that line myself, …pity more people didn’t use that tactic when they get asked too much personal information…people don’t need all the personal or private details of anyone…whatever happened to privacy or is that an old concept now as well.
