“Sometimes the rest of the family doesn’t show their feelings”

Lynne McGranger reflects on why Seven doesn't celebrate Home & Away milestones.

Home & Away this year marked its 36th year on television, as Australia’s longest uninterrupted drama, but while Seven toasts its export and talent discovery successes, it barely acknowledged the 35th anniversary last year.

Or the 30th in 2018, with network execs acknowledging there has been a reluctance to point to its endurance in a landscape of shiny and new TV.

“They tend not to …. it’s just the nature of the beast, luv,” Silver Logie nominee Lynne McGranger tells TV Tonight.

“I always say, ‘We’re like the crazy, rich, old aunt. We just get on and do our thing, nobody pays us a lot of attention. But we always come good with the money.’

“I mean, I know we’re loved and I know we’re cherished, it’s just that sometimes the rest of the family doesn’t show their feelings as much as maybe they should be. That’s what I think.”

McGranger is approaching her 31st year on the Summer Bay soap, which surprised one fan.

“They went, ‘Oh wow. So did you get a gift? Did you get a gold watch?’ I said, ‘Nup. I got a script.'”

  1. It’s a crying shame as all the best long running soaps do something to mark their history. The fact that Home and Away doesn’t, has alienated me in ever wanting to come back. Many missed opportunities. Peta Toppano is Leahs mum. Leia is a Greek girl in a seaside town, that rarely see her family. This wouldn’t happen in real life, unless there was a family rift. In all the time that Georgie Parker has played Roo, they’ve never had her daughter return. On the rare occasions that they do bring someone back, like Juke Jacobs, there is little connection to their previous tenure on the show.

  2. It’s a shame that they don’t look at their history more. I would’ve loved a funeral for Morag with sisters Colleen and Celia returning.

  3. It’s sounds like Seven are in denial about who watches terrestrial TV these days – it’s not young people. Home and Away viewers are aware it’s been on a long time.
It’s a shame they couldn’t at least do a celebration of some kind within the show itself.
