Stan Grant not returning to Q+A

Patricia Karvelas becomes host of ABC show after Stan Grant opts not to return.

Stan Grant has decided to step away from his role as presenter of Q+A but wil move on to new projects with the ABC.

Patricia Karvelas will host for the rest of the year.

Grant stepped aside as host in May citing and undertaking 8 weeks leave, following ongoing social media abuse and headlines.

“I’m not walking away for a while because of racism. We get that far too often. I’m not walking away because of social media hatred. I need a break from the media. I feel like I’m part of the problem and I need to ask myself how or if we can do it better,” he said at the time.

ABC Director, News Justin Stevens said today, “Stan Grant is one of the country’s finest journalists, storytellers and broadcasters and we will be delighted to have his contribution across a number of different ABC programs.

“We want to do all we can to support Stan and ensure he continues to play a major role in Australian media. He has the ability to lead our media toward a kinder and more constructive conversation.

“In Wiradjuri ‘dyiraamalang’ means a teacher and leader. Stan Grant, a proud Wiradjuri man, is both of those things and I’m looking forward to seeing what he does into the future.

“Patricia Karvelas has been doing an outstanding job as fill-in host and we’re delighted she has agreed to continue in that role.”

Voice Correspondent and The Drum presenter Dan Bourchier will host a special edition of Q+A from the Garma Festival soon, with an all-Indigenous panel.

“Dan is doing terrific work in a key role covering the Voice to Parliament debate and referendum and having him anchor the program from Garma will be another important part of this,” Stevens said.

  1. I will miss Stan as host. He was my fave apart from former host, ie Tony Llewellyn Jones. I wish him all the very best and look forward to seeing him on another project. i dont know Patricia Kavelos. (apart from seeing her on Monday). I will miss you, Stan.

  2. I just hope Patricia does not get a hammering on social media especially YouTube like Stan Grant and David Speers copped with people abusing them for just doing their job, they have feelings too, so regardless if they appear to some as left, right or biased it is completely unacceptable and offensive. Stating your views if okay but nasty spiteful or vindictive comments are not. They are a reflection on the person posting them and extremely disrespectful to anyone …to those who do…use the off button and simply don’t watch instead of hiding behind a screen for anonymity.

  3. I agree about seeing presenters, like Leigh Sales and Fran Kelly, but Patricia Karvelas comes across to me as biased, so it won’t help in gaining or maintaining trust on the biased sentiment of Q+A, and public broadcasting neutrality.

  4. Hopefully he’s back on screen soon. The ABC can’t afford to have big name presenters like him, Leigh Sales and Fran Kelly barely appearing on screen at all.
