Airdate: Building the Snowy

Engineers, scientists, workers, historians and local communities reflect on an engineering feat in Australia's history.

Three part documentary Building the Snowy tells the story of an amazing engineering feat, the politics and the geographic challenges.

Building the Snowy tells the remarkable, surprising, and sometimes controversial story of “The Snowy” from the original idea in the aftermath of The Second World War when Australia’s population was less than seven and a half million to the present, when great machines and an international workforce are again building for Australia’s future. Told against the backdrop of one of the most rugged and beautiful parts of the country, this is an engineering story, an industrial and an environmental story. But it is much more, it is a story—told by engineers and scientists, Snowy workers past and present, historians and members of local communities—about a project whose impact reached across Australia and whose influence changed Australian society.

7:30pm Wednesday on SBS.
