7plus: A Friend of the Family

New US true crime drama series, A Friend of the Family, will screen on 7plus next month.

Based on the harrowing true story of the Broberg family, the nine-part drama explores how one family’s lives were forever altered and their resilience tested when faced with the unimaginable.

The cast features Anna Paquin (Flack, The Irishman, True Blood) and  Jake Lacy (The White Lotus, Being the Ricardos), Colin Hanks (The Offer, Impeachment: American Crime Story) and Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Afterlife, The Handmaid’s Tale).

Lio Tipton (The Edge of Sleep, Why Women Kill), Hendrix Yancey (George & Tammy, Unbelievable), Austin Stowell (The Hating Game, Three Women), Patrick Fischler (American Crime Story: Impeachment, The Right Stuff), Bree Elrod (Red Rocket) and Philip Ettinger (First Reformed, Angelyne) also star.

Seven’s Director of Content Scheduling, Brook Hall, said: “The acquisition of a premium drama series such as A Friend of the Family, exclusively for 7plus, is testament to the network’s ongoing commitment to bring our audiences more of the best in entertainment, news and sport, for free and on demand.”

The Broberg family’s jaw dropping, stranger-than-fiction story has stunned true crime fans for decades. Over several years, the Brobergs’ eldest daughter Jan was kidnapped multiple times by a charismatic, obsessed family “friend”. Devoted to their faith, family, and community, the Brobergs were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their manipulative neighbour used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart, and turn their daughter against them.

Nick Antosca (The Act, Channel Zero) serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer of the series. Alex Hedlund and Eliza Hittman are executive producers with Hittman also serving as director for multiple episodes. Jan and Mary Broberg also serve as producers.

A Friend of the Family is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.
