The Bushwackers bow out of The Voice

Veteran folk singers relinquish their place on Team Jess.

Veteran folk duo The Bushwackers last night surprised coach Jessica Mauboy, and the audience, by quitting The Voice.

They made the announcement during the Ultimate Callback episode in which Mauboy was about to choose between eliminating them and singer Ezra Williams (sister of Young Divas singer Emily Williams).

Vocalist Dobe Newton interjected, saying, “I think we can make this easier for you. This show and the challenges to come we think are about people just beginning on their career journey, so Roger and I have decided you need Ezra in your Battle team.

“As much as we’re having a wonderful time, this is about the future and Ezra’s the future.”

It was a gesture applauded by all (although not one they offered when singer Tiarose Burgess was eliminated as they progressed last week).

Nonetheless, their exit was footnoted with a rousing reprisal of the iconic I Am Australian, which Newton co-wrote with The Seekers’ Bruce Woodley.

  1. Decent episode last night but I renew my frustration with the editing such that we don’t get to see all the performances (that is some performances are only partly shown) but hear the judges decision which makes little / less sense to the viewer given we didn’t see all of what was being judged. I think 4 (maybe 6) artists were reduced. For the sake of I’m guessing 4-7 extra mins, surely they can find that time? My guess is Jess would have chosen Ezra in any event (I think David’s article infers that unless I’m mistaken) but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the bush wakers Paul Kelly version.

    1. As a fan of the US version, the Australian version is quite a poor version.

The pacing is awful in the Aussie one not to mention that the judges all appear to lack chemistry with one another.

But I agree. They could have edited this whole thing better to showcase the talent.
