The most famous submarine warfare fiction, Das Boot, was inspired by the U-96, one of Hitler’s most fearsome U-boats, of which the true story set on the coasts of France is so exceptional that it goes beyond fiction. This documentary highlights the unexpected Franco-German relations, and casts a new light on this cult film by Wolfgang Petersen, revealing to what extent the latter is (in)directly influenced by German propaganda.
