Today show: promo

It's Karl Stefanovic, Cathy Freeman-style.

Nine is getting into Olympic mood, as Karl Stefanovic dons a Cathy Freeman-style lycra running suit for the lastest wild promo from the Today show.

Karlos has a history of outrageous promos (Hannibal Lecter anyone?) and looks like 2024 will be no shifting from that.

If TV is guilty of taking itself too seriously too often, I guess there is always Karl to remind them.

  1. Should have had him acting as Matthew Mitcham diving into a pool with a beer gut and doing a belly flop because flop is all Today has done while Karl’s been at the helm.

  2. There was a news article about Today fans wanting the show to go in the direction of US Today. I think the best standard is ITV’s Good Morning Britain and This Morning. Sets are nice and the shows are sprightly. There’s a mumsy focus on This Morning, which I don’t mind.

The casting is good with hosts and guests. It’s different to Today and Sunrise. I think ABC News Breakfast is the best of the bunch in Australia.

The promo fits the culture of 9 viewers. I find myself having to dumb down my language when speaking with Channel 9 people and viewers. It reminds me of when Micallef had a show on Nine and it didn’t resonate with their audience, despite Micallef being successful on ABC.

It’s quite funny. I’ll say something and they don’t understand the terminology, though academic people would. Then I have to dumb down the terminology. I think if morning shows were more comedic like The Panel (not The Project), more people would tune in.

    1. ‘Micallef Tonight’ 2003 – I think it ran for a handful of episodes and then was swiftly axed.
Do you remember Ben Elton, Live from Planet Earth – went a similar fate

      1. Yes I remember Ben Elton looks back on Live from Planet Earth. I think Ben Elton is funny himself, though the format of the show didn’t resonate and the sketches were unfunny. I think Ben Elton is the sort of person that should be a breakfast TV panellist. Ben Elton or Karl Stefanovic? I know I’d prefer to see and hear Ben Elton.

      2. It’s Ben Elton Live from Planet Earth and there’s also the TV Tonight article “Ben Elton looks back on Live from Planet Earth” where Ben Elton revisits what happened to the show.
