  1. I’ve done up a roster for the year where I only have one streaming service a month and rotate through them, putting shows I want to watch into the Reminders App on my phone, and worked out it will save me over $400.

    1. With this and other recent steep hikes I’m going in a similar direction, keeping a log of the services on and off throughout the year, depending on when compulsive viewing hits. Also, it’s worthwhile keeping an eye open for sales events ( eg prime Day, Black Friday ) where prices are very cheap. For example I signed for Britbox on a 12 month deal for only $60.

  2. The “pinch” is what they’re not getting, the only people doing OK In today’s environment are the well off obviously and aged pensioners… Go figure

  3. Good grief these streaming services really have no idea I purchased britbox on special $50 for the year then the email the other day that when the special ends (for me in June) service will increase to $99 per year the special was about the right price, how do Disney britbox and Netflix justify this? Netflix is priced ridiculously an ad version a $17 version and $11 teir that will probably soon disappear I got paramount for $44 per year and prime for $49 per year clearly at the end of these specials price rises/gouging will definitely reassess what worth keeping and what’s not.. Britbox is gone at June if Netflix the SBS of streaming dump the $11 teir well that’s gone for me as well … Are we watching the streaming lead rebirth of FTA?

    1. By the fact that they spend billions showing high quality TV without ads. It was always Netflix’s plan to use cheap movie and FTA content to kill of what remained of FTA after DVRs, and Cable. Foxtel + Movies or Docos is $864 p.a and even Now streaming basic entertainment is $420 p.a. No we are not watching the rebirth of FTA. We are watching streaming replace premium cable the wealthy. Wealthy households in the US used to spend $US1400 a year on that.

  4. I just renewed mine yesterday at the 13.99 price and for the last time. Quality of content has gone downhill and like I keep saying streaming services in Australia sucks. Price hikes are the nail in the coffin for streaming services. Price hikes to keep the features doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.

  5. So is the streaming services admitting they weren’t enough in the first place for their services. Often wondered how they could offer these at less than $10 p/month.
Disney is in a worse position than the other companies. They put everything into streaming. At least Paramount, MGM, Warner Bros. etc didn’t close down all their cable channels and stop allowing movies to be shown like they did here in Australia.

    1. Disney have also pulled out of the physical media market in Australia (and other countries), so whatever Disney (and affiliates like Fox) DVDs, Blu-rays, and UHD Blu-rays that currently remain on shelves, that’s the last of them. So they’re really not giving us a (legal) alternative to streaming either.

I’m still not subscribed to any streaming platform. It’s physical or bust for me. And I can’t see myself getting enough bang for my buck to justify spending $180 per year for a single streaming platform to essentially rent a bunch of downloads that are also of a poorer quality than what I could have bought on disc.

I won’t yield. If streaming is the future, then I’m content with “living in the past”.

  6. Yeah nah. Luckily subscribing / unsubscribing through Apple is super easy so I’ve now switched to a monthly plan – today was the last day of the first monthly sub and I wont be resubsscribing until a few shows back up and I’ll just binge them in May when Doctor Who drops. Same for Paramount +.

  7. These companies, I reckon, must think all the customers of their services have a unlimited money tree and can afford all of these increases, as well as all of these services. It is pure greed by the Mighty Mouse asking for this kind of increase, not everyone can afford to keep paying the extra $3-4 per month even for the latest star wars or marvel show.

  8. Wow another increase, was great at $8.99, annoying when it went to $11.99 and pushing their luck at $13.99, no way I’ll renew at $17.99 to keep 4K which was one of their benefits and which should be standard now. Only difference between the tiers should be number of screens.
Interesting also given they don’t have a heap of content like appletv also don’t yet both keep doing large price increases, will be cancelling when mine comes up for renewal at those prices.

  9. These retroactive 4K taxes are a huge slap in the face, particularly in the context of it initially being available at launch at $8.99…

It’s only a matter of time before Disney+ Standard goes down the Netflix route and introduces ads, lowers the quality even further, and shifts all plans up a price tier.

Screw em, it’s not worth maintaining a subscription.

  10. An extra $40 a year for 4K seems a bit steep to me for something we were already getting. Unsure what is happening over at Disney, I think this may turn some people off, especially at a time when everyone is feeling the pinch.
