Report: Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson to depart after one season

An unexpected exit coming for the recently refreshed Doctor Who universe.

Reports emerged in Britain over the week that Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson will depart the season after her upcoming Season 14.

Gibson appeared in the 2023 Christmas special as Ruby Sunday alongside the new Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa).

The Mirror reported she will be replaced by Varada Sethu (Jurassic World Dominion) under showrunner Russell T. Davies.

“Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting,” a source told the Mirror. “Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure.”

On Sethu, a BBC source added: “Varada is a real gem, Russell was just blown away by her talent. The cast and crew have really warmed to her and he’s sure the fans will too.”

Gibson will reportedly not appear in the 2024 Christmas special after her first full season, which premieres in May.

The BBC and Bad Wolf did not respond to reports but the story has not been denied and appeared to be confirmed by Gatwa on Instagram with a picture of himself and Gibson. It was captioned with “My lil” and the Gemini astrological sign for twins and a heart emoji.

  1. It has been confirmed by the production team that she is in season 15 for at least 3 eps, just not as the main companion which seems to suggest that her story comes to a natural conclusion.

  2. Oh… this is an unpleasant surprise. I thought Millie was great in the Xmas special and Ruby seemed like a character that could have a nice little arc built around her. An arc that seemingly will come to a conclusion sooner than we hoped. And it’s not like we’ve never seen a companion leave after a single series.

All of that said, I’ve absolutely loved Varada’s work to date. I’ve never seen her “lead” anything, it’s only ever been as a secondary character, so being elevated to the Doctor’s companion is a great pick-up for them and her.

  3. Seems like less of *departing* and *let go*. Based off her chemistry with Doctor it seems more like RTD enjoying having one season Doctor and Companion pairings. Hopefully this is leading to a return with this era of companions and she’s not gone for good. The previous specials have suggested that many past companions/assistants are always still around and always willing.
