  1. David, what does BVOD stand for? Thanks. And, Ive just had yet another closer look at the new ratings. SBS isnt included as a main channel. Thats not fair. I watch (and many others do too), SBS a fair bit as well.
It isnt right that SBS is excluded in the new system.

      1. Oh. Ok. I will need a magnifying glass to read/interpret?? the new ratings. Id better start to watch my fave show via tablet or laptop then, to boost it. Thanks for explaining what BVOD is. Appreciated. It will be interesting to see if SBS is still included in the new ratings. I also watch some of the train doccos too.

  2. Wow, there’s so much outrage over an outdated and not-fit-for-purpose system.

Sorry all, but the networks and Oztam won’t care what you think. Ratings are for advertisers and are a sales tool.

The old system was in a death spiral, dropping 10% year on year as viewing habits changed. This is the future, more aligned with the way streamers see their numbers and also more reflective of the actual viewership.

And to the person lamenting the demise of the ‘Call The Midwife’ numbers (or anything on a multichannel), trust me, those numbers didn’t matter to anyone at the network. It is a channel stuffer, put on to fill airtime.

Thank you, David, for walking us through this new system. I’m here for it!

Only question is, will there be audience share published for ABC and SBS, or just the commercial broadcasters?

    1. How do you know what OzTam and the networks care what we the viewers think. And why was the previous ratings system out dated and ‘not fit for purpose’? Tv ratings cant/shouldnt be Only for the Primary channels, (or Pay tv of which I dont subscribe). Also, if the spare channels didnt matter to the ‘bottom line’, Why do the programmers/financiers? buy up more shows to broadcast? ie Vera and Shetland on 7two to name two., or the programmes on 92,94,99, and 76? These shows rate. They are important to their fans (Im not into half of them, but still). As for Midwife, its been running for just started its 13th season in UK. As for calling Call the Midwife a ‘channel stuffer’, it isnt. It is the best show on tv. Ask the 5+ million viewers in UK. Way more in the US. Its historical, honest, full of hope, promise, love, and shows how childbirth and various medical conditions have evolved since the 1950/60’s. Thank God. And society. The celeb wannabe shows on are rubbish..

  3. OzTam needs their heads read if they think we the viewers would be happy with this massive change. People watch the multi channels. Daily ratings especially for 7two prove/show it. I watch a lot of 7two, and 92, 94, 96, and 11 Peach (Neighbours as well as Ten.. Sometimes even 74 I also forgot in first post; 76. I watch 76 quite a bit too. So to not be able to check the ratings re these programs is to be a bit?? highhanded by OzTam, and a massive disservice and unfair to us viewers. Im very disappointed.

  4. Im late to the ‘party’/funeral/discontent. What the H e c k????? Does this mean no spare channels will be included now? My main interest has always been Call the Midwife, Sundays on 72 (7two). Now what??Apart from last weeks issue with promotions, last night I checked freeview, its still on, but from 10.30; and Vera is supposed to be on at 8.30; yet with my new TVWeek, Midwife is scheduled for 8.20 (not 8.30, or 10.30…). So now this new ratings system is not helping/showing anything from our spare channels ie 72, 92,94,96,99,11. (the other ones dont rate).. How long till we can get our old system back, David? I also like to see the percentages shown, and state by state. To quote an old saying to the new ratings way, ‘if it aint broken, dont (try to) fix it. The afternoon weekly shows dont rate either…..I hope the ratings system will listen to what you tell them, and to us, the viewers. We want the old way back. It makes more sense, and easier to read/gauge. I wanted to see last nights ratings for Midwife.

      1. The closest (this time around) that Midwife rated on Sunday night was 3 only 2 weeks ago. It usually rates 5-10. Which is well within Top 20 (as it was). The last time Midwife played current eps, was S11, on abc/channel 2, on Saturday nights at 7.30, and, it was Top 10 then, and around May or July, and; the opposition then, was ironically, Space Invaders. So i find the new series rather ironic again, as to whether abc will actually broadcast s12 eps 1-8, then finaly show s13, (currently on in UK). I bought the dvd set. Glad i did. Re your comment, lets hope some of the broadcasters do decide to issue their own results, including the spare channels. They need to. Im sure the show sponsors would like to see the ratings. Many thanks for your reply. Very much appreciated. And thanks for all the hard work you do. Also appreciated. I bought Midwife dvds S1-12, which I see regularly. 3-4 eps per night.

  5. So much for state trends. Always enjoyed checking news viewership by state to see which local teams did best.
The breakdown of the programs popular on the second channels was of interest too.
No doubt all to do with making the user pay for more detail to realise advertising potentials.
Viewers aren’t the ones the ratings are produced for.

  6. This Ratings System Totally Sucks Crap.. Please OzTam Bring Back the City Breakdown Numbers, Ratings Percentage Shares, & Etc..

  7. We knew this was coming (albeit at short notice), but as others have mentioned, i also dislike this.

The National average figure is fine, but is “out of order”, because of the Reach takes prioritise in the rankings. It’s simply people flicking though during the commercials, that’s reaching these peaks.

Not much we can do, i guess, but see how this goes…..

  8. No offence to you David, this whole new rating system sucks.

Any chance you can make the charts more readable. At the moment, I have to download the pictures, and blow them up so I can read the data.

    1. I understand, which is why I indicated I am reviewing. With any change of this magnitude it requires a little patience. I had specifically requested a sample from OzTAM last week for this very reason but it never arrived.

  9. Did they really have to take away so much of the data breakdown (%, 5-City etc), and multichannel and subscription ratings. IMO the ratings will now be very predictable (i.e. MAFS will win tonight, 10 underperforms, etc)
