TV Tonight Awards: Worst of 2023

2023 was a very bad year for the Big Brother brigade.

Readers have voted the latest season of Big Brother as the Worst Aussie Show of 2023.

It landed ahead of Seven’s Blow Up and polarising shows, Married at First Sight, The Project and The Block.

It was also bad news for host Sonia Kruger who, for the fourth year running, took out the most overexposed performer. In 2023 she hosted Big Brother, Dancing with the Stars, The Voice and the Logies red carpet -but the hard work also paid off with a Gold Logie win.

HBO flop The Idol was voted Worst International Show while local TV fails were also perceived as the Biggest Blunder of 2023.

  1. Stephen Curry must still wake up screaming in a cold sweat over Blow Up… At least it had a thankfully brief run before the studio bosses called in the vet.

  2. Sona Kruger Most Overexposed four years in a row? Ouch!

With Hot Seat finishing up, could we see Eddie “Everywhere” Maguire go from Overexposed to Underexposed in 2024? lol.

A lot of reality shows listed for Worst Program – locally and internationally too.

  3. “The Idol” and “MILF Manor” were breathtakingly awful, but the votes for “The Crown” on this list are rough. It may have lost some of its polish in later seasons (and the recent Diana arc was a bit much) but to suggest “The Crown” was the worst show on all TV is a bit much ….

  4. Channel 7 managed to make their take of Big Brother even worse by making it a romance show of TikTokkers and Instagrammers.

I can’t be alone, I know I’m not, in seeing how the old Big Brother could thrive being live in the current social media landscape. Live streams. Then a constant farm of popping out live clips and updates from the house. Which then build interest in watching the daily show and getting people invested. The experience of it happening right now, interaction with voting is completely different than something recorded a year before and overly produced.

    1. There is still the old BB format in overseas countries, where it’s about the random group discussions with the live stream feeds for those that want to tune in 24/7, not the heavy focus on reality drama. There is drama, but it’s not the major focus. It was about psychology and not the drama.

      1. I think people have forgotten about the dominatrix, dancing doona sex scandal, gay housemate coming out, model housemate talking about eating disorder etc. The show has always been about drama from day 1, it was just better more interesting and original back in the early days when the attention seeking cast didn’t know how the show was received on the outside.

    2. totally agree with you.
As I’ve said about a 100 times – look at what the UK did this year. Natural reality drama was made through the brilliant casting of the housemates.
There’s an the (live) eviction clip of the hosts reading out Dylan, Noky, Paul and Trishs names and the (eviction) audience/crowd reactions are just amazing – from the drama that unfolded in the house. It was one of the highest rating evictions, was trending everywhere and people were genuinely talking about it everywhere too!

  5. I don’t count worst shows as reality, they should be a seperate category because they all dominate. I’m more interested in people’s opinions on the worst scripted shows (The Idol was a mess for sure, but it had a few moments, particularly the first part of each of the first few episodes before it turned into dross). For me the shows I couldn’t get through were: Orphan Black: Echoes S1 [Stan], Yellowjackets S2 [Netflix] (talk about dropping the ball big time…), Robyn Hood S1 [Stan], Glamorous S1 [Netflix], FUBAR S1 [Netflix], Dead Ringers [Prime], Gossip Girl S2 [Binge], I’m A Virgo S1 [Prime] and the worst… Year Of S1 [Stan].
Worst shows I finished was lead by a runaway winner in Fear The Walking Dead S8 [Binge], then Black Snow S1 [Stan], Velma S1 [Binge], Mrs. Davis [Binge], Up Here S1 [Disney+Star], and Unprisoned S1 [Disney+Star]

Is it obvious I like lists? Haha!

  6. Poor Grant. Didn’t even have a show airing in 2023 and still overexposed. Perhaps he is top of mind for lots of people still because of all the Deal or No Deal ads.

    1. Yes it is unfair criticism. Beau Ryan was probably more exposure on that network last year. People must forget to consider relevant time periods when nominating.
