SBS acquires Scottish crime reboot Rebus

Richard Rankin stars in a reboot of 2000 detective drama, set in Edinburgh.

SBS has bought Scottish crime reboot Rebus, based on Ian Rankin‘s novels.

Set in Edinburgh, the series stars  -no relation- Richard Rankin (Outlander) as a young John Rebus as a detective sergeant, who is drawn into a violent criminal conflict that turns personal when his brother Michael, a former soldier, crosses the line into criminality.

The original Rebus aired between 2000 and 2007. The new series, written by Gregory Burke, shot in Glasgow and Edinburgh last year.

Also featuring are Lucie Shorthouse (Line of Duty, Ten Percent), Brian Ferguson (The Ipcress File, Spanish Princess), Amy Manson (The Nevers, The Diplomat) and Neshla Caplan (The Rig, Scot Squad).

Niall MacCormick (Complicit, The Victim, Wallander) and Fiona Walton (Shetland, Annika) are directing the six-part show, produced by Angela Murray.

  1. The first version was by STV/ITV. They cast John Hannah for S1 who didn’t resemble the character. Hannah has been attached to the production as a producer and was forced to step in after another actor pulled out. The longer episode did reflect the stories more closely though. Stott who looked like Rebus was cast for S2-4 and cut the stories down. Rankin hated these and stopped writing Rebus novels, switching to Inspector Fox, until he bought the rights back in 2012. They seem to be starting with Knots and Crosses book 1.
