Tonight SBS Food series Taste of the Tropics showcases “Iconic FNQ”

Samantha Martin, the Bush Tukka Woman, is on a quest to uncover the authentic essence of the Taste of the Tropics by exploring some of the iconic natural and cultural landscapes of Far North Queensland.

Her journey spans from Port Douglas to The Great Barrier Reef, The Daintree Rainforest, and picturesque cane farms, where she immerses herself in the rich, vibrant multicultural community and discovers an unparalleled abundance of diverse produce that defines this unique region. The warmth of Tropical Far North Queensland extends beyond its climate to encompass the vibrant colours and community.

Along her travels, Samantha encounters compelling local characters, each sharing captivating food stories. Samantha meets Brandon Walker, a Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owner and tour operator. Together, they embark on a hunt and forage in the mangroves for fresh local ingredients from the sea and land. Samantha then heads to a sailing catamaran to meet Ant Turner and Junlan Chen, a couple and tourism operators united by their love for food. The journey continues to the Daintree Rainforest, where Samantha visits The Botanical Ark, guided by Susie and Alan Carle. Samantha then explores a cane farm, enjoying a memorable BBQ experience with a foodie and resourceful cane farmer. Local legend Rodney Rasmussen, known for his love of food, introduces Samantha to his unique BBQ apparatus made from an old tractor fuel tank and a yakitori grill crafted from cane cutting blades.
