The Baywatch reboot is a step closer..

US network FOX has secured on a script+penalty deal for a new version of the iconic series -the penalty means if it does not proceed producers Fremantle will still reap a financial payment.

Lara Olsen (Spinning Out,  90210, Beauty and the Beast, Reign) will serve as showrunner for the reboot, originally created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory J. Bonann.

Baywatch originally ran from 1989 to 1999, becoming the most-watched TV show in the world, making international stars of the likes of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, before Baywatch Hawaii from 1999 to 2001. There was a Baywatch Nights spinoff, reunion movie and the Dwayne Johnson / Zac Efron-fronted 2017 movie.

The synopsis for  the new series is: “Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find.”

The series aired in Australia on 10 and even filmed episodes at Avalon in Sydney but missed out on Baywatch: Down Under as a series.

An Australian broadcaster is yet to be confirmed.

  1. I wonder if this is the HI-Surf Program that FOX had originally green lit for the 2023-24 television season, before pushing it out to 2024-25 because of the strikes???

  2. It was only a matter of time before it would be back. Of course it will have to be updated to line up with the sensibilities of the current times.
