Will The Talk survive?

Speculation US daytime show could be replaced -by a new soap.

Speculation is swirling that US daytime show The Talk may be culled by CBS after 14 seasons.

The show developed by actress Sara Gilbert, which screens in Australia on 10, trails rival shows The View and Live! With Kelly and Mark in both Total People and Women 18 – 49.

Remarkably, CBS recently announced development of a new daytime soap, The Gates, following the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. There is speculation it may run for an hour per episode and replace The Talk.

While The Gates is yet to be picked up for a season, The Talk is yet to be renewed for S15.

The Talk hosted by Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Natalie Morales and Sheryl Underwood, screens 7am weekdays on 10.

  1. This show is unwatchable for me. They make all these politically correct comments and the audience clap. One time I counted 33 times the audience clapped in one show.

  2. Other than the really well established legacy daily soaps, do soaps work as an entertainment production in 2024.

Like in the era of streaming, is a new daily hour long show that is design to be watched on that day going to capture an audience.

      1. Fair point.

But those are the big legacy shows that have lasted 30, 40, 50 even 60 years – same as Bold & Beautiful, or Young & Restless. Their success appears to rely on rusted on loyal audiences that accumulated when there were 5 channels maximum and you get what you got, and didn’t get upset.

I just don’t see how a new soap (with new characters and stories to grow to love or hate) will fair well in gaining their own audience who will attach in 2024 when there’s so much media fighting for attention.

        1. I would say completely opposite there is always a market for new soaps. If you look at the success of soaps that are online and their markets. Venice and The Bay have been going for multiple seasons. Also there is always a overseas market that can help in how long things are around

    1. It’s a surprise CBS are looking at a new daytime soap (the first on US network TV this century), especially to replace presumably cheaper programming – but what gives The Gates a chance of success is it has a point of difference to the existing soaps.

I suspect in reality it’s commissioned for Paramoint+ rather than CBS, but they see no point in not utilising it on the network too – and frankly it needs that launch pad to give it any chance at all.

  3. 10 will no doubt be looking at ‘The Gates’ after it debuts. They have space for it given they are replaying 8 year old episodes of Dr Phil and Judge Judy.
