When in doubt, send in more?
With disappointing ratings this year Big Brother is turning to its bag of tricks. And unfortunately their choice is to just flood the house with more people.
TV Tonight has confirmed Intruders will enter the house in a Special to air Tuesday May 22 at 7:30pm.
Unfortunately Big Brother has boxed itself into a corner this year. Under increasing parliamentary, media and community cynicism about previous stunts it is difficult for Producers to orchestrate moves that deliver shortcut solutions. So it is more dependent on the housemates to create storylines of interest.
Pivotal to this is BB’s casting choices, which this year have been criticised for mirroring previous seasons of partying 20-somethings. BB has also placed much emphasis on romantic storylines which have worked well with couples like Peter & Christina, Marty & Jess, Peter & Turkan, Jamie & Katie. But are viewers bored with safe options?
One of the other problems is that viewers may be overwhelmed with the number of characters (I can barely pick one blonde from another). Since sending in the original housemates BB has already added 5 extra housemates, and is now set to send in Intruders. And the move so early also diminishes a mid-season spike when they are usually introduced.
Last night Big Brother had 878,000 viewers.
But if BB is to attack the ratings spiral it must send in Intruders who are social opposites to these twenty-somethings. Romance is one thing, but the basis of all drama, scripted or unscripted, is conflict. We need housemates who are older, from a different class and life experience. Does anybody remember how The Hothouse was addressed when all those young couples suddenly had to deal with Pete & Tina from Adelaide? They nearly won the thing and they plugged viewer disinterest.
BB send in somebody over the age of 50, or preferably 60! Then we’ll watch!
The scheduling of the Intruders special also means a Special scheduled for Wed May 23 (previously May 16) is now dropped.

I actaully like Bodie, I like he’s fun loving attitude that clashes with some of the control freaks in the house. I am so upset that it was a double eveiction, because I would have loved to see him with out the shackles of the crazt TJ.
I also think he’s totally Hot.
I hear Bodie is a model – does anyone know WHY he’s one & a underwear model at that – he’s nothing special & has the attitude of a right zone 3 bogan.
The problem with the show lately is that they’re drawing WAY too much attention on TJ/Bodie, and all they ever do is fight about Bodie not spending any time with TJ during the day. Honestly, who #$@%ing cares?!
I no longer watch the daily shows as I now stick with Up-late. At least it’s more spontaneous and the content depends on who’s awake during the show. 😛
I agree that it would be good to have some over 40’s in the house … but it is not boring!
If it was boring I would not be still watching it every day … and I was determined to not watch it this year. It is the most interesting year in a long time and there is pleanty of conflict if you watch each day …

Big Brother should be called Big Boring – I flick to 10 during the Home & Away ad breaks & it’s like watching paint dry so I flick back to the ads. I too can’t tell from one blonde to another, they need real people in there who can bring some life to the house – I also think Big Brother needs to be rested after this current season, its getting very stale!!
Exactly – conflict! Remember a few seasons ago where they divided the house in two? I think they need to actually do something in the house to make it interesting.
Having people bitch about each other and see a Mormon pray every day doesn’t make exciting television.
I think they should lock up a few people in the white room – see how that fixes them.
Totally agree David. We need conflict, send a Vesna type chick in from last season. We need some fricken drama. I’m an avid watcher but i still can’t tell you much about the housemates apart from their names. I have no idea where they’re from, or what they’re like….boring!
