Bart Simpson is one of several animations to be illuminated on the Sydney Harbour Bridge tonight as part of the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Artistic Director Wayne Harrison said Bart would be part of an amusing, unfolding narrative building across the night.
“From 8pm, you’ll see a series of tricks every five minutes which I think will be very amusing,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“We just keep adding to the story throughout the night, so you get a bit at the family fireworks, more at 10pm in a segment we call time’s cycle and a bit more at 11pm in a segment called time’s arrow.”
He said, “The story would climax at midnight and continue into the early hours as revellers went home.”

I went to a park with a bunch of family and other relatives last night and in the sky, a skywriter had written “Dance 08 Ten”, but by the time the pilot reached the word Ten, most of the word Dance had already faded away. 😛
I thought that Channel Ten’s 9:00 fireworks camera work was a disgrace. It was horrible. I turned it off a minute in to it and didn’t bother watching the 12:00 fireworks.
Yes television, Sydney is an international city, if bart is 1990s, then Sydney Vs Melbourne is 1970’s.
i love The Simpsons but really, Bart Simpson is not only an American icon but is so 1990s!! (surely Homer is the ‘star’ of The Simpsons these days? or is that just because I’m getting older!!?!?) I know Sydney likes to think it’s an international city, but is this what Sydney wants for its signature event of the year?
Perhaps the network that broadcasts the coverage shouldn’t have creative input into the event!!?!?
channel 10 would be loving that they choose a character in one of their shows.bit of free promoting
David, do you think that they put Bart on the bridge on purpose? Considering that The Simpsons airs on the official broadcaster of the fireworks?
