Foxtel launches HD website & blog

Foxtel will launch four new HD channels early in 2008.

Today it launches a new website www.foxtel.com.au/hd with a clean, user-friendly explanation of how HD works. Its front page includes a cute animation of “Pixel” characters which seek to de-bunk the technical jargon.

Foxtel also launches its very first online blog (hurrah!), written by Executive Director of Content, Product Development and Delivery, Patrick Delany. Welcome!

As yet there is no specific info on the content of the 4 new channels. But while commercial networks struggle to communicate their HD product this move by Foxtel is certainly headed in the right direction.

Press Release:

FOXTEL today reveals its new website,
www.foxtel.com.au/hd, which aims to demystify and explain High Definition (HD) terms and technologies as the platform gears up to launch its new HD service in early 2008.

The biggest thing to happen to television in years, FOXTEL HD will deliver up to four dedicated channels with extraordinary pictures and sound to Australian living rooms.

Taking a fun and creative approach to education about HD, FOXTEL encourages viewers to get online and meet the “Pixels”. Found at www.foxtel.com.au/hd these cute animated characters illustrate that HD is basically an increase in the number of pixels displayed on your HD TV that produces clearer pictures.

The new FOXTEL HD website provides a handy guide to purchasing that perfect new TV to display crisp, clean and vibrant images in HD. Visitors to the site can also find useful information to unravel the mysteries surrounding correct cabling for your HD TV.

Patrick Delany, FOXTEL Executive Director of Content, Product Development and Delivery, explains: “FOXTEL HD is coming in early 2008 and this new website will help consumers to understand its significance and impact on entertainment in the home. We want Australians to learn more about how television is broadcast now, and the amazing HD TV broadcasts that will become the standard.”

“With the current huge choice in flat-panel televisions, its important viewers purchase a unit that is HD compatible to enjoy watching their favourite programs today and into the future.

“FOXTEL will present HD TV the way it should be, providing the most extensive HD service for viewers with a broad range of incredible content. We are excited about what’s to come, and want to assist consumers in finding the correct information about entertainment technologies.”

As part of the website, FOXTEL will launch its first blog, “The Full Picture” www.foxtel.com.au/thefullpicture. The blog will offer visitors the chance to read up on FOXTEL HD developments, and gain an insight into what makes FOXTEL’s Executive Director of Content, Product Development and Delivery, Patrick Delany, tick.

High Definition uses up to five times more pixels than standard TV to create its superior picture quality. HD TV is richer, with more vibrant colours and better-defined edges and lines. Not just about image, many HD TV programs are made with cinema-style surround sound to enhance the home entertainment experience.

  1. I’m very skeptical as well. After I read they would have only 4 dedicated channels I’m thinking that none of them will be movie channels. So, far the real Digital Foxtel was delivered only on very few channels. Most of them are still analogue and it shows. I’m giving them 6 months after which I will cancel my subscription as well.

  2. How will they manage the extra bandwidth needed for HD when they can’t even produce acceptable SD? That’s why I gave up my subscription. With a 70″ TV it’s a waste of time.
