Seven actor out of the closet

Network Seven personality Tim Campbell has responded to recent media gossip that linked him to Anthony Callea, by acknowledging he is gay.

He says he is just mates with newly-single Callea.

The former Home and Away actor told The Advertiser, “(Anthony and I) are mates – he’s had his rough trot, I’m going through a rough trot and I’m really concerned for my (ex) partner.”

Campbell, who says he actually came out 12 years ago, recently split from his partner. “Part of me will probably always love him because 11 years is a lot to share with each other.”

Both Campbell and Callea appeared in the Perth stage production of Rent and became friends. He is now in rehearsals to play Johnny O’Keefe in the musical Shout.

In addition to hosting Seven’s controversial National Bingo Night Campbell is also one of the contenders as the new host on Dancing with the Stars.

“There’s nothing in the way of being ashamed about this (but) the label thing worries me a bit because I don’t want my work to be affected,” he says.

“If every time I’m written about now it’s as ‘the gay actor’ it would bore the hell out of me.

“Coming out at 20 changed me a bit, but at 32, I’m pretty comfortable with who I am and what I’m doing.”

Campbell was linked to Callea in the Confidential column in the Herald-Sun.

Tim Campbell will appear as part of Seven’s Carols in the Domain at 8:30pm Saturday Dec 22 while Anthony Callea is on Nine’s Carols by Candlelight.

  1. It’s fantastic that another actor and entertainer has come out. Judging from initial responses on & people don’t mind it at all. We all know that gay people are the best entertainers. 😉
    I know I sound a little bit biased, but don’t blame me. Our society is still trying to put aside that notion about sexuality and what it means. It belongs to the wax museum together with Fred Nile and his followers. Horror section that is.

    I actually had no idea that he was gay … always thought he was HOT but that it was just wishful thinking on my part!
    He is adorable! Make him the host of Dancing With The Stars … that would be BRILLIANT! At least he can dance (unlike Daryl’s lame efforts!).

  4. I picked it when he was on Dancing… actually, I HOPED he was as I’ve always thought he was an awesome guy. Good on him for doing something heaps of other actors are too scared to do.

  6. After reading a recent article in tv week, I thought as much. He kept refering to his partner as “they”. I don’t blame the actors for keeping mum about their sexuality. Like it or not, it’s harder to accept an openly gay guy in a straight romantic lead role than it is to accept a straight actor playing gay.
