Sony BMG signs Corby

Australian Idol runner-up Matt Corby will sign with Sony BMG on Tuesday.

He will release a single next year and possibly an album, depending on its reception.

The album released by Natalie Gauci is the first time a debut album from an Idol winner has not reached number one.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, signing Corby is seen as a move by Sony BMG to reaffirm its Idol brand. It had previously said it would only sign the year’s winner.

Corby is understood to have a contract that allows him some artistic freedom to shift to his preferred music style, blues rather than pop.

  1. The fact you think being number one in Australia actually means anything is rather funny.
You can sell 500 cd’s in five different ARIA assigned stores and you’ll make number one.

    Its the old fallback theory.
You put any person on TV for Twelve weeks and people will buy there stuff. The Industry knows people need to be spoonfed and told what music to listen too.

  2. Guy debuted at #1, Casey debuted and peaked at #2, Kate debuted and peaked at #10, Damien debuted at #3 and rose to #1 the following week. Natalie is the first Idol winner not to reach the Top 10 with her debut album (so far) and she’s the first not to reach #1 on the official singles chart, although it *must* be acknowledged that, like every Idol before her, she reached #1 on the CD singles chart (downloads let her down). In the year since digital downloads were first incorporated into the singles charts, total digital sales have increased phenomenally. It’s quite possible that had Casey and Kate’s debut singles been released in the digital age, they may have peaked at #2, as well. Natalie’s being unfairly judged by the media. Her album is really good!!! Had she not won, though, I doubt Sony/BMG would have signed her, so it’s good that she did, because now both she and Matt get to have a recording career.

  3. only Guy debuted at #1 with his debut album, Casey didn’t get there (#2 i think), Kate got #12? or #14? and Damien worked his way to #1 after a couple of weeks… Give Nat a chance. Theres so much pressure to get to # 1for an oz idol winner, yeh fair enough sony/bmg have invested some money. but these artists are never taken seriously anyway. Where’s there real aria awards!!! Even Sneaky Sound System have only made it to #5 with their ‘highly prasied’ album!

  4. Anyone remember it being explicity said by Dicko (or was it Holden) on one of the early episodes of this season that ONLY ONE CONTRACT would be offered by Sony BMG this year?

I called bullshit on that right there and then. Not surprisingly, Sony signed Corby just like they’d always intended to do 🙂
