A bit of housekeeping…

TV Tonight is here to offer television news, information and opinion with an Aussie perspective. I hope readers are enjoying the resources and archival content provided.

I’m really proud of the site’s growing popularity and the passion for television displayed by this great community that TV Tonight has fostered.

Unfortunately, the anonymity of the internet sometimes encourages disrespectful behaviour in a minority of cases.

From today comments will now require an ID. You can use your Blogger ID or Google Account if you have one. Another great idea is to create an Open ID which will allow access to a wide variety of blogs.

Please note the normal Comments Policy about fair play still applies.

  1. My experience is publicists are far too busy to spend substantial time commenting on blogs.

The Mint was a UK format.

Unfortunately I had to delete the original post by Neon Kitten due to profanity but the edited text is here:

NEON KITTEN: “Believe in the networks and what they do”?

What – you mean pulling shows without announcement or apology mid-way through seasons, or in some cases after only one or two episodes? You mean the way they then run those shows unannounced to “burn them off” ensuring the hundreds of thousands of people who DID watch are going to miss them? You mean the late-night scam shows, scam ringtone ads, scam sex line ads? You mean the tens of hours of that same damned Proactiv Solution infomercial every… f***g… night?

Or do you mean the networks’ investment in quality programming? City Homicide. Macleod’s Daughters for the girls. Hmm. I think that’s about it. No, daytime-soap-calibre so-called “drama” like Home And Away or Neighbours doesn’t qualify. That crap would be run during daytime in the US because a nighttime viewing audience would laugh in its face and switch off in seconds.

Of courfse there’s no “underground lair”. But seriously, do you expect me and everyone else to believe that almost every time I or someone else criticises a commercial network – constructively and with justification – some gentle kind civilian fan of said network races to defend them with outrage like “bet you work for channel 7”? And *always* anonymously? I wasn’t born yesterday.

Watch such silliness evaporate now ID is required. Thankfully.

Oh, and as for “it would serve no purpose”? Oh, come ON. You surely have seen how pathetically petty the network rivalry is in this country these days. I’m sure there’s plenty of “little employees” who think that by defending the network they hope to be able to have an actual say in they might boost their loyalty points with The Boss. Or haven’t you noticed how pathetically fake and sycophantic corporate culture is in Australia these days?

Play nice and aim for brevity guys!

  2. My gosh Miss Kitten, you are one cynical “glass is half empty” kinda person!
I’m going to try balance out the negativity and hate you have in you by saying some positive things In defence of the networks, I’m an APA by trade and no, I dont represent any network.
All you basically did was list faults of the network, and some arent even faults. As for Scam ringtones, adult lines, well there an industry unto there own which generate a huge profit, you may not like them or feel threatened by them but they serve there purpose and make people money. (It’s okay to make money right?)
As for the late night Scam shows, well.. theres one, The Mint, and again, it has a significant fan base of regular watches, and even though you dont like it your suggesting it be removed, something your against in the very next line you wrote.
These shows are late night shows, Im either in bed, or working late shift, like the majority of people, TV isnt set up for 12am viewers, besides from what I read in the TV guide, Ten seems to be playing some pretty good movies after Letterman these days (caught the tale end of Apocalypse Now Redux the other night!)so theres always alternatives.
And suggesting that US networks wouldnt put up with axings or any of this other crap for a second, well, they do, our model is slowly mirroring the US’s with its sudden axings, time shifts and hey, even our late night TV is nearly ALL American, The Mint was bought off the US.
And you seem to also dislike (amongst your huge list) any local drama’s, City Homicide is a great show and rated very well, I’m actually wondering if you even watched it or saw the promos and decided you hated it first!. Macleods Daughters may not be your cup of Tea but its a corner stone of C9’s programming and has produced some great television, it may not represent your demographic or tastes but it does others.
And bagging Home And Away and Neighbours? I dont watch either show but there basically institutions in this Country and others, just about every overseas bigtime Aussie actor made there start on either one of those shows and again the storylines may not be aimed at you, but there ratings reflect that a younger audience is eating them up, I know some people that are fanatical about Home And Away! As for yanks turning off, you would find that if Australia had the same audience numbers as the US, the quality of our shows would dramticaly rise. This isnt about making everyone happy, they are a buisness and they have to make money.

lol as for “little workers” appeasing their Big Boss’s by saying “C7 in 08” on Daves blog actually happens, the chances of that are very slim. I cant see the head of C7 or C9 sitting back and thinking, “Good one Johnny!! That really boosted our Network!! Heres a raise!!”

If we were talking about say a particular person here, one that you used to know. I would be asking “What did this guy do to hurt you? You seem so angry and upset about them, did they cheat on you?” because your hate for public television is strong. Seriously, if you dont like it, buy cable and watch something else or jump on the net and download the shows you want and create your own playlist, thats what I do.

For all the things you listed that the networks do wrong, they do a crap load right, we do have some great dramas in Australia, we have some great comedy formats that we have sold around the world, our sports coverage is world class and up with the best, news is actually fair and balanced unlike any other in the world, there not trying to shock you or lie to you, some great actors and actresses that have ganined world recognition for there work started on Aussie TV, some original show ideas that have been succseful, man, I could go on for a while.
So take those cynical glasses off and stop being such a sour puss and remember a very smart person once said. (bonus points if you can name them)
“Its easy to have hate in your heart, the challenge is seeing the good in things”

    🙂

Ps, Miss Kitten Id bet money your a Big Brother Fan 🙂

  3. Miss Kitten, some people who are just a part of the regular public believe in the networks and support what they do, not every comment defending the networks is from some underground lair with a large round table, big TV screens and hundreds of consoles manned that are beeping and flashing.
It would serve no purpose to leave the odd comment on a blog defending their network, how would that help?

  4. Excellent decision, David.

Hopefully this will put an end to the regular anonymous blind-defence-of-the-network comments from people who surely don’t work for said network 🙂

  5. This will reduce feedback, I frequent many blogs and not one requires a password, username and registering an account to leave feedback.
At work I cant sign in to certain accounts (facebook, Youtube, hotmail google acounts or this one, etc etc) unless I use a proxy (very time consuming and can get me into trouble at work)because these kinds of sites and many others are considered time consuming in most workplaces.
Other blogs like Crooks and Liars, Onion, MovieBuff, etc etc require just to leave a name and email then hit submit, but none require you to sign up with an account, register etc etc.
The whole purpose of the internet is to be able to voice opinion with a large degree of privacy and anominity, constantly registering your personal details leads to identity theft and other such internet based crimes (not that I believe you intend to do this Mr Knox!)
You may still get people viewing the site, but your comments will go down. In saying this Ive had a blog account for quite a while now and used to host a personal blog, but closed it down due to privacy issues.
Good luck with this one, I still think just leaving a name or email would have been acceptable rather than have certain amounts of my personal details stored on a server just to say I think a show sucks!
