Judge bans Today Tonight gangland story

Update 6:33pm: Justice King extends the ban nationwide to avoid the story being reported in other media.

Victorian Supreme Court judge Betty King, who banned Underbelly from screening in Victoria, has banned an on-air showdown between crime matriarchs Judy Moran and Barbara Williams just hours before it was due to go to air.

Justice King imposed an interim order stopping the interview going to air on Seven’s Today Tonight in Victoria after viewing the segment in court this afternoon.

“Being the queen of banning things, it is, obviously, my role,” Justice King told the a murder trial jury.

“If it is on, I urge you not to watch it – it’s Mrs Williams and Mrs Moran.

“I don’t know what’s in it, but I don’t imagine it’s going to be edifying or pleasant or anything else – one thing it is not going to be, it is not going to be relevant.”

She said the two women will have strong opinions and won’t be hesitant in voicing them. She told the jury that if members of their family or friends watch it, they should not talk to them about it.

“I do wonder about the timing, but that’s a matter I have to deal with,” she said.

  1. I’m becoming a bit of a fan of the irrepressible Justice King. First she’s telling trial jurors that she’s seen Underbelly and “it’s really good,” and now she’s “the queen of banning things” 😀
